Thank you everyone for your advice, I must sound stupid to the experts so please don't laugh when I ask member stewaw what is a flood type lamp?

Not sure if it is the same in London, but it should fit the standard socket fitting of "Medium" base. Just make sure that the bulb base type is for "Medium." Which, most are.
