OK.

I've read in recent times that an aviary size of 80 sq. ft. is OK (or minimum) for Peafowl.
Whenever I read that I think : do people really know how small that is ?

I took a picture of me laying in an area I had Quail. From 2x4 center to 2x4 center, it measures 6' x 12' = 72 sq. ft.
The reason I lay in it was to give size perspective. An adult male is longer than me, even with my arms stretched out.

Here is a picture of a three year old male. From the corner in front of him to the up-right by his tail, is 6'.
(this temp. aviary they are in is 720 sq. ft. total)

So what do you think would be a better minimum ?
How about you go outside and mark out an area 8' wide and 10' long. 80 sq. ft.
Lay in this area and ask yourself : is this large enough for a bird a meter/yard (or more) longer than me, to live it's life in ?

In the book Pheasants of the World, by Keith Howman, it states a minimum of 400 sq. ft.

Now since you are in your yard marking out the other size....mark out one  20' x 20', 400 sq. ft.  Lay in it as well, and see what you think.

Don't just guess, try what I have said above and then tell me, in all good conscience, would you keep Peafowl in such a small area (80 sq. ft.) ?

NOW I just love that picture of you Reeves laying face down on the cold wet ground to make a point....Damn no body but you would do that...That is Friggin coooooooool.......!
Alot of breeders use 15 x30 foot breeding pens with a 10ft. x 15ft. x 10ft. tall shelter at one end. Isn`t your whole yard fenced with a 10ft. tall chain link fence? Turn them suckers out with a clipped wing.

I'm sure it was 5 O'clock some where

Chain link is only 6'. With how shy the new birds are, they would be gone and never seen again.
Not to mention all the Fox and Coyotes here.....
They are destined to be in aviaries the rest of their time here.
When I get their new digs built, they'll have about 2000 sq. ft. run and a building of about 10' x 12'.

At first glance of the first picture, my first thought was that you got yourself an old boar wart hog.......after a second look I could see that it wasn't.     What's that stuck on the end of your nose?   0009   LOL!!

Seriously though, that's a good way to put things into perspective, especially when dealing with larger birds. I simply wouldn't have them if I had to keep them in a aviary that small. I'd prefer they ran around in the yard.........no doubt that "Reeves" avairies are as big as my yard!   :-o

Glad to see that you're getting something to put in those huge avairies.   tu2
