Are Jumbo Bob's any good for bird dog training? Do they fly better or worse than standard bobs? Do they have more scent?
Thanks
Mike

Mike,
My experience with jumbo quail is that they don't fly very far when flushed. This usually means the shooter doesn't have a chance to shoot unless someone wanted to blow the poor think to bits just a few feet in front of the dog, which I wont let happen with my dogs. This creates a frustrating situation since my goal is to have the dog find the bird, hold point while the shooter flushes and shoots the bird, and then have the dog fetch on command. The last time I tried with jumbos we had to keep nudging the birds to flush over and over again before they would take off far enough to shoot them. This caused my young pups to get very irritated and frustrated because after they point I make them hold point until the bird is down and ready for them to fetch.
Just my $0.02, Scott

Although I dont raise quail for hunting, I believe alot has to do with the raising of the quail more so then the type. If raised tamed, then they wont be as flighty. You have to try to raise them without much human contact as possible. I believe this may be a bigger factor then type.

I tend to agree with Akira, decent flight pen & little human contact and Jumbo's fly fine. In fact I prefer them. Got some a couple years ago & have been raising them since. When my birds flush they fly a hundred yards minimum & sometimes farther. I sold a couple dozen to a pro trainer last year & he loved them. My breeding stock is getting old, if anyone knows where I can get some more eggs let me know please.

I agree with drwink, I got some a few years ago and they actually fly better. I don't raise any regular Bob's anymore because these birds grow out faster and are very wild. I shot about a 1000 of them last year and they flew much better than some of the regular birds we shot at the field trials.

I have been purchasing my Georgia Giants (1lb) from Wadley Game bird in Georgia and have been very satisfied. I have gotten high % hatches and the birds are great to train my dogs with. they do fly quicker and farther due to their larger wings and tails. I do raise them in a 20/100 flight pen and keep them flying to strengthen their wings. They are $55 per 100 with shipping included. I highly recommend them. Very nice folks. Tom

Hi Tom I got my first batches from Wadley's but didn't think they were still around. Or thought they had a problem last year & read some unfavorable info.
do you have some contact info for them ?
thanks
Wally

Std. Bobs have definately been better for me. They fly faster because they weigh less and they have more of a "wild" instinct than Jumbos.

Ive had nothing but great sucess with my wisconson jumbos.....not quite as fast as northern bobs but plenty fast and fly fine and far. they were bred with larger wings and tail feathers for similar flight characteristics...yes they are slightly slower tho but still fly well and many of my friends still cant hit em very hardy as well.
