When you can breathe, again:
I have a Quail, and Chukar eggs hatching in a couple of days, and have a new brooding area. It is on a concrete floor. Everything is set up, including heat. I'm thinking about different materials to cover the floor. I have generally used large pine shavings, but the last I bought seemed to be damp, maybe from slightly green wood? That is why I'm considering different materials.
My primary options are:
Pine shavings (large)
Pine shavings (fine, nearly saw dust, I worry about chicks eating it)
Cedar shavings (two nearby growers swear by cedar, but I've always thought it was bad)
Fine sand (masons mortar grade)
Prairie hay
Alfalfa hay
I can have any of these in place, in the brooders, within an hour, or two, of making the decision. I may have misunderstood, but think someone once said they brood on bare concrete, but that can't be sanitary. If no one has a better idea, I'll probably stick with the large shavings, I was a little nervous about the dampness. I may move them to wire at two weeks.
