Ok, if you hatch a batch of quail. What do you do if you have too many males ?

Also, how can you get females to lay infertile eggs, if keeping males together will make them beat each other up?

When do BW's start laying? I heard bobs won't lay the first year. But I heard somewhere else hens only need 14-17 hours od light to trick them into laying. Thanks for reading this.

You are in the north east.....you have a good excuse, so are forgiven !  :grin:

1/. Lots of things you can do. Eat them, turn them loose, sell them ........

2/. You kidding ? No sex ed. in your school ?  s020 (2nd half) Not till about Feb/Mar. next year.

3/. Hens hatched this year, will lay next spring. You can "force" then to lay sooner, by the bird will likely not be any good to you long term. (burn out) So it will depend on what you want them for.

I'm in the rural part of the north east. Most folks up here that I know just hunt deer, turkey, and at most raise chickens. I don't know anyone to ask about quail lol.

So I'm guessing for the infertile eggs, I just pen the males off individually so they don't beat each other up, or pen them together but lots of space. Just make sure no hanky panky is going on with the hens.

I am patient, I won't force any bird to lay. I wanted something hardy to raise here. And BWs are native to these parts, I here.

ND, a Hen will lay eggs even though she has not mated with a Rooster. It's natures way. Bob's lay about the 20th week. If you want to get great advice on releasing birds PM Jim Murray, he really knows his s%*t!

If you are raising quail on a ground pen. How can you prevent predators from getting the quail? Will coyotes or foxes dig under the pen to get them?

Should you bury some chicken wire about 8 inches underground around the pen?  ty2
