I'm getting ready to move my bobwhite quail from a cardboard box brooder (which worked very well) into a larger wooden box. A local grain elevator donated two bags of pine shavings (I'm an ag teacher doing this for a class project). Is it ok to use some pine shavings as bedding in the larger box?

Keep them off the shavings. Use 1/2" wire to keep them up off of the shavings and out of their own mess. They'll poo in it and walk all over it then it sticks to them. And they'll actually peck at/eat some of the shavings which isn't good for them.  Use the shavings under the pen to catch the waste and delay the inevitable smells.
