If you can't use traps or rat bait, or shooting them, I suggest calling the Dept. of Health in your area and asking them for suggestions on the getting rid of them.

I solved my problem years ago with a 22cal and commerical rat bait.

You could feed them the cookies you had planned to send to me.  (OK, but you considered putting poison in them lol).

A 4" conibear trap in the opening, or regular steel traps burried in dust, and grass clippings set at the openings they use, would be my first attempt.  Rats may be the worst, once they get started.  When they run out of eggs (or before), they will start eating the birds.

You can fasten bird parts onto the trap pan (do this before setting the trap).

.22 Calibri ammunition is another method, but be absolutely sure your neighbors don't see you walking to the pen with a gun, if you are in town.

Hey fellas..........how about one of those drowning in the 5 gallon bucket traps?

Never used one and don't know how it would work with rats.

Ode.....if you quit throwing garbage, such as inedible foodstuffs that you cook out in the yard, you'd probably cut them back considerably.

There is a guy at my work that is raising show pig and he has had a problem with rats in the barn. He cant poison because if a poisoned rat dies in the pig pen the pig will eat it.

So get this. Today he said he is going to put coke the soda in a small dish and leave it on the floor right before he turns out the lights and leaves. Some one told him that the rats will drink it and die because they cant burp. I dint know if it will work. But ill ask him if he had any dead rats tomorrow at work.

Or my choice would be .22 rat shot. c110

thanks for the replies guys ..i think the traps are illegal , but i might try the live traps and bash em"....and i dont leave any scraps im careful to give them only what theyll eat immediatly ..rice and fresh scrambled eggs are the only cooked foods ...they even get in the rabbit pen ..i have a rabbit colony free range.. and all they get is pellet and baby carrots occasionally  i only see them at night,we have huge storm drains every where and nomatter how tidy you are they come around... the birds are inside right now so are the rabbits but in the spring i planned on putting them back out so im just trying to get ahead of the game ..wont  the quail get in the 5 gal buckets too, and drown? i like the idea about the cola, let me know s98

With some modifications to prevent birds from entering, I'm sure it could be put inside the pen. But why put anything inside the pen?  I'd be looking to get them where they are gaining access to it and place traps, etc. on the outside with some attractive bait.

I was told that the pan of coke had to have fly bait added to it to work.

Once the rat drinks this concoction it will only travel a couple of feet and drop dead.

these 3 items will end your problem....Only thing left to do is bury the evidence. It will take care of coon and possums because they can not throw it up unlike cats and dogs. They will die within 10yrds of the pan.

Now that is true. Coke and that fly bait is a deadly mixture. I was told if you use that mixture be extreemly careful. I was told it will kill anything even deer and do it quick. Ill ask this morning if the plain coke worked.

Well the guy here at work said that he couldent see a rat one last night. He thinks the plaine coke worked. You might try it if you dont want to messw with poison. If it dosnt work on big loss.

Even 48 to 80 in one day isn't too much of a swing.  We are getting 25-30 degree swings, every day.  High yesterday was 63, low tonight supposed to be 27.  I wouldn't think of trying to herd them into a shed.  Did you stimulate their oil glands, before letting them out, in the first place?

Does the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission put out smudge pots to keep the wild birds comfortable, from the "Man made Climate Change"?

(God, I hope they don't read this).

I was actually more concerned that they would read it, and think it was a good idea.  And I'm really not 100% sure about the answer.  10-15 years ago, it would have been predictable.  Who knows, these days.

After re-reading, I'm not sure I clearly made the point that, they will not, generally, use shelter if it is available, and that perhaps they should be indoors, if oil glands have not been stimulated.

I don't know nuttin' 'bout button quail. But I bet they need to be watered down and conditioned to withstand the elements just like any other bird/critter.  You're not doing them any favors by not exposing them to their enviroment, especially where you live.

Well, Buttons may be different, but I'm talking about that much swing in one day, also.

If we had cameras installed, it would be fun to give you detailed, but bogus instructions on stimulating their oil glands.  Since we don't, I'll suggest doing a search, here, it has been covered in detail, several times, and someone might leave out something useful.  Since they are small, I'd suggest doing it on sunny days, only, giving them plenty of time to dry, before sundown.

Just spray them with a water bottle as wildergamebirds directed.......

This should be done occasionally if they are sheltered and do not get rained on. It's good for the birds and they enjoy primping/cleaning afterwards.
