I use 1/2 X 1/2 for the floor and 1 X 2 for the sides for both quail and pheasants. My pens are off the ground so predators cant get their little paws through the 1 x 2 sides.

I belive I will go with the 1/2 by 1/2 for floors and 1/2 by 1 for the sides. I want to thank each and everyone who answered my post,

I've had to double up the wire on my coop. I used 1/2" x 1/2" for the entire enclosure and it is 3' off the ground. But something, coon/skunk/pine martin chewed through the wire and pulled out a few quail last winter.

So I put another layer of 2"x2" heavy gauge wire on top of the existing. I did this in the middle of winter in a snow storm so it looks kind of crappy. But it seems to have worked.

I've used both... 1/2x1 and 1x2 on the sides. The 1/2x1 is an all around better size, gives you more options with young birds. Young Bobs can slip thru 1" chicken wire. And 1/2x1/2 on the floor works good.
