I'm building a wire cage for my quail. The wire floor is 1/2 inch square wire. Do I let them run around on the wire? I  thought that they might hurt themselves on it.

Thanks,
Andrew

1/2 inch wire is fine

This would be fine for the sides. I recommend 1/4" square hardware cloth for the bottoms, particularly if you ae putting "just hatched chicks" in them. Even then, I use an indented craft paper to form a solid bottom to prevent the chicks feet from becoming tangled.  DO NOT USE NEWSPAPER. It is too slick and will cause splayed legs.

For older birds, the 1/2" square wire is fine.
