Headed back to work. 2 hour drive one way. Picked up one of those lazer temp finder thingys & will check temps as I go.
Will check in f (rather than c) so we both know how hot it gets

Gear oil is (what Ford calls for in this diff) 75w 140 with friction modifier.

I jacked up one side of the diff to load the wheel bearings, then the other way to do same for other side.
Took 4lts + the tube of modifier to fill.

Outside temp about 0c or a couple degrees lower.

Top speed ......maybe 80 km/h ? Only went 4 km on gravel road.

Heat in shop ! Was out trying to empty the shop fridge & tinkering in heat till about 9 PM !

What type of warrantee did the junk yard give ya? Did you pull the cover off at the yard?

I bet that heat felt good  s020 s020

Let me know how those work out.

Batteries (both) stone dead ! Had it running 2 days ago !
So off to find the problem later this morning.
Getting tired of spending $ on this truck. May be time for a new one......except they are so bluddy expensive !

Replaced both batteries. Originals were cca 750. New ones cca is 890 ?

Old multi meter was working weird. Bought a new one.

Diff temp after about 11 km was 24c or (about) 74f. Where the front bearing is.
Going on a longer drive to see what happens.

Was supposed to go to work, but had to miss 1st day due to truck ...... foreman called last night (never worked with him before) & said he hired someone else !

You are saying 74*F on the dirve shaft U on the pumpkin? If so that isn't hot at all.

Sorry to hear about the  batteries and the job loss.

Went for a longer drive yesterday. Didn't keep track of distance traveled. Maybe 20 km ? Maybe more ?
Checked temp when back & it was 121 f
I shoot the lazer at the pumpkin, where the pinion bearing would be. Just behind the yoke.

Now thinking the howl/growl is from something else. Will likely put it up on stands & run it , to see if I can pin point better.

121*F is to hot. Do you think that the driveshaft may be the problem when you replaced the "U" bolts and the rear being moved more forward and causing a bind on the drive shaft to yoke?

Drive shaft didn't move. No U-bolts. End is a kind of flat plate. Same as yoke.

re Pinto. Just read this morning a guy went & looked at it. Needs gas & brake lines. Gas tank. Some rust issues. I forget what else.

Changing the ATF out of the transfer case today.

I too thought temp was high. But on this forum it seems not so much ?
http://www.thedieselstop.com/forums/f32/differential-temperatures-normal-high-83383/

Truck loaded up right now & is over 10,000 lbs

Oh ya.....company I've worked for ran out of work for me. Made a phone call to another one.....should be starting on Thursday.

Your post reference to the rear.

No choice but take it slow !
Week end involved ! Nothing open.
Had to order new U-bolts (not supposed to use old ones due to torque to yield)
Then due to having to change out the backing plates, I had to pull the axles & hubs.
So new hub seals.
One of the junk yard hubs had bad bearings, so used a good one from my diff.

Got it all together & took it for a 4km drive. Crawled under the truck & put my hand on all parts......pinion was warm. Not sure if that is a problem......yet.

PS: new heater going into the shop tomorrow ! No more working in the shop at -40c !

Am I to understand that the "U" bolts that you are talking about is to hold the rear axles to the frame, correct?  If the complete rear including the both axles was swapped out, there could be a possibility that the whole unit could be set forward towards the front of the truck. This could be the cause of excess heat.

The same goes for rear side tracking when the whole rear isn't lined up. Ever see a truck or car going down the road crooked? This is due to the misalignment of the complete rear, where the Axel are connected to the body frame with those huge "U" bolts.
