Title: where to get wire
Post by: huntingken111 on April 07, 2006, 07:54:38 AM
I'm new to this and would like to build a 8 ft. by 10ft by 6 or 7 ft. high.  does any body know where i can get some good rust proof mesh wire?  i would like 1/4 by 1/4 on the bottom and 1/2 by 1/2 on sides.  i want this thing rodent and predator proof after reading about all beheaded bobwhite quails.  If someone has a different idea about what wire to use that would be great too.  the stores here in grand rapids have up to 4ft high but not galvanized.

Try this site, www.bfproducts.com
They have wire, netting and everything that you would be looking for to construct your pen. They are in central PA.

It will last longer, but its more expensive. I use the PVC coated on the outside of all my pens.

on bfproducts.com they show POLYETHYLENE MESH.  they say its easy to clean and cab be used for pens instead of wire mesh.  has anyone used it and do you like it.  any help would be great

I used galvinized poultry wire and I am now facing having to paint it, after not even 2 years. If I had it to do over again, I would have spent the extra money and put a coated wire on it. Any of the "solid plastic" wire would have been torn right thru by stray dogs had I used it. I personally would use the rubber coated poultry wire for strength and longevity.

Although I do think that 1/2'x1/2" on the sides is not nessecary, my poultry wire is 1" and have had no problems. I would also use 1/2"x1/2" on the floor and not the 1/4" that you mentioned, it will give you problems, it's just too small, especially if it is coated with anything.

Thank you everybody.  This site is so awesome. I can't wait till I start raising my bobs and learn something so I can start answering peoples questions.  Is all I have to do now is wait for my dnr permit and buy my eggs.
