Title: Mr. Recycling (13 pictures)
Post by: Reeves on June 08, 2008, 06:24:00 PM
Well, been keeping busy on my off time and rain days.
You may remember the BBQ tool trolly I made ?
Well, I also had plans for the top part. I had salvaged an old camper for the parts. I took the table leg (pipe) and the round bracket that fits top and bottom of the pipe, from the table. I then bolted the bracket to the bottom of the BBQ , pounded the pipe into the ground , for a fire pit. Used within a couple hours of being done.

Salvaged the 2" ball and hitch from my old boat trailer. Got tired of the pin hook up on the lawn tractor. So , using the welder the neighbor loaned me....

Picked up 12' of 1 1/4" square pipe for a pipe rack on the back of the truck. I needed this, as the tool box is "oversize" and to haul free pipe home.....

Neighbor had a small tiller. Gave it to me, because she couldn't get it going and her hubby didn't seem to want to work on it. All I had to do was adjust the throttle cable. Offered it back, and they didn't want it. However, it would "dance" all over the place. I bolted 15lbs to it and now works great !
In the back ground the three gas cans on the left were free as well ! You can see some hose on the shelf ? It's the free tiger torch !

Free big tiller. Had to sort of re-build it. Only thing costing me was a new belt and a brass bushing.

Next is the free table saw I picked up about a week ago. Steel legs and main frame. Works...I have a couple small things to fix. Just to get a couple locks freed up.
Note the decorative branch. It's a play branch for one of the Quail pens.

Free Suzuki 8 horse engine and gas tank. I'll be working on the leg, maybe new seals. Already have a buyer !

Last winter I was working in the bush west of Ft. McMurray , AB. Saw some pistons , out of a gas compressor engine. Free. No idea what I'll be doing with them. Cool though, eh ?
That is a 930gram (2lbs) coffee can sitting on the middle one.

Was driving into a lease site looking for free pipe. Saw a black box thing on the way in. Good thing I checked it out on the way out ! It's a DeWALT XRP kit. Hammer drill, recip saw, skill saw and light !
No way to find out who owned it. (tried)

Free camper. Going to salvage all windows and all propane stuff. Going to build a "shack" and put up on (free) pipe for a sort of tree stand, for Coyote control. It will have the heater and stove, so it will be used all year long ! I have other big (free) windows I'll use.

Got me a free stainless sink. There was no taps though. However, I had some other free plumbing stuff. I still have to get some 2x4s and plywood to finish this vegy washing station for by the garden.

Free incubator ! I know, she has been scalped. The guy I got her from had her in a wee tiny pen with two males during breeding season. His loss : she has hatched out two years in a row ! (this will be her 3rd time now) She is on about 20 eggs.

Reeves ,   have you ever thought of becoming a used car salesman.

Key word is "salesman".
I very seldom sell anything !

Yes, the DeWALT was a great find ! Been using the dril and recip saw lots !
Although, I had to buy a new charger. But I "talked" them down by over $80.00 on it !
Drives the wife nuts when we go together to get stuff. I refuse to pay maked price on anything !
Last pair of work boots had a small scuff on one boot....talked them down on those !
They sell trees, bushes, flowers etc at the food store in town. I'll look at the sticker price, then make an offer of half. You would be surprised at how often they take it !

You need to be on the show "Let's Make a Deal". That was my favorite! Have fun playing with all your free stuff. Although, it all seems to be things that involve work... Not play... hm.

And my wife thinks I collect too much crap! I have got to show her your post. I like free and when it comes to metal and stuff like that, you can always make something out of it. I made a nice big yard roller out of a 300gal diesel tank, two 55 gal drums and parts from an old grain auger. I could find a roller heavy enough to smash a mole hill so I decided to make one. It only cost me about $200 for the concrete to fill it.

I welded the two 55gal drums together and welded them in the center of the diesel tank. The space between the drums and the tank I filled with concrete to provide a "little" weight and to keep the tank from creasing if I hit a rock or something. It only weighs about 3500 lbs. Oh, I can also fill the drums with water if I need the extra weight .

I pull it with the 4-wheeler but don't get in my way because it is a little hard to get stopped!

I can seem to find any pics here at work. I know I have some at home.

I am also looking for a p/t job rolling asphalt for the state of IN. They haven't called me yet though.

My yard is pretty flat so I don't think I have to worry about it getting away from me too much. It really rolls pretty well, it is the turning that gets rough. 3500lbs tend to push the rear of my 4-wheeler around a bit, definetly something you do at a slow speed! You won't find any mole runs in my yard though .

Reeves - if you come up with any free metal, you can send it down my way. I have lots of "interesting" projects I need some metal for!

I do! It is a '66. It has been in the family for a while, my grandma owned it before me. I bought it off her in '92. Of course I have done a few things to it since. Fun to drive but an expensive toy with gas prices. I try to drive it to work about once a week anyway.

How about you, do you drive your Mach much? What engine do you have?

I have had the car since 1990. When I bought it, it was in very poor shape ( in  basket ) so to speak. I restored every thing from the bottom up and drove it to all the local car shows etc, did quite well in its class. Didn't drive it much, but had lots of fun and got to know lots of people. Then I had a fender bender, brought it home put in the garage and began to disassemble it for repairs and haven't  finished that part of the project yet.  Maybe one of these days.
The mustang has a 351 cleveland 4 barrel , auto trany, power steering, no air.. wish it did, maybe will put an add on, not sure.

I don't have any pics here at work but I will see what I got at home. I tried to scan a photo I had here and it looked horrible.

Your car sounds pretty nice. I took mine to a few shows when we first redid it but I haven't since. I had some stuff stolen off of it at the street machine nationals in Duqion, IL a long time ago and I have been to a show since.

How about you CH, are you not driving yours anymore?

I lied, I don't have any pics of mine that I can find. We had our hard drive crash last year and lost all of our pics. It just so happened that we just got back from our honeymoon, downloaded our pics and erased the card for the camera. Shortly after that, the hard drive crashed and we lost EVERYTHING. Not a good subject with the wife.

I get it out and drive it down the road every once in a great while. It still has leaded fuel in it from 1985!!..........still starts and runs like it did in '85 and have never had any carb problems whatsoever. My father had a '70 Lincoln Mark III with 31,000 miles on it, he had all kinds of carb problems with this new gasoline going bad and making a mess of the carb.  I've been threatening to sell it for 15 years, it's plugging up the garage and could stand to be restored. Paint is original and is scratched, etc. from years of being a "catch-all". Vinyl roof is in perfect condition.  Just can't bring myself to sell it, especially when I fire up that 390, factory dual exhaust with glass packs, no metrics on it whatsoever. Had a lot of good times in that ole car.........those were the days......... s49

Charlie,   still has leaded fuel in it from 1985.  Now that's what I call stretching the price of gas.
Restoring it would be fun, but it is expensive these days.  I would bet if you sold it you would regret ever doing so.  Every time you fire it up your memory will take you to all them good times you had ------ you don't want to forget them I hope.

Well, I've got too many other interests and I've never been interested in restoring it. If it where a truck I would be more inclined, I'm not a car person at all. I never cared much for the color of it (Metallic Brown) and would have much preferred a red one. It's not worth a whole lot, even in A-1 condition.

Quote
I would bet if you sold it you would regret ever doing so.

That's what I'm afraid of.    :-|

I'll post a pic when I come across one...........it's buried right now.  I've got 23 years out of one tank of gas!!!!!!!    Hard to believe isn't it?, but it's true, I had to take some fuel out to repair the gas line a few years ago, the familiar smell and the color of the leaded gasoline brought back memories of my Sohio service station days.  Just goes to show how much it has been run since '85. Everything still works, even the headlight doors and A/C. All the heater controls where ran off of vaccum too. Maybe I could sell the fuel on eBay as vintage or antique?   ^-^

I'm not quite sure. You'd think that a fella who used to sell the stuff could remember, but my long term memmory keeps fading away it seems.  I'm thinking .759 to .809 a gallon seems to come to mind for gas in those years.  I don't remember the exact year when they got rid of leaded gasoline, but they where fazing it out then, I'd say it was close to being banned around '86 or '87?

jaime...born and raised on/with Dad's heavy construction (D-8s etc) plus building cars , dune buggies etc etc from a lad , all my life. Invent "stuff" and build. I've also given ideas away for free (dumb !) that I really should have put patents on.
I think most older folks will be much the same. Had to invent stuff to make money go farther, plus the "Fun Factor" of building stuff and inventing better ways to do things.

From what I've seen, it is becoming a "lost art".

Looks good Reeves. I had the same problem with the wheels on my "BBQ Welder cart", they become flat on one side with very much weight, I haven't taken the time to replace them yet, but I'll probably be forced into it one of these days when it's least expected. The ole' lawn mower wheels is a good idea.

I thought so too !
For those that don't know, BBQ wheels are hollow thin plastic. Lawn mower wheels are solid rubber (mostly? never cut one apart) and the rim is a lot more sturdy that the cheap plastic ones. You can see this in the pictures.
I had saved a good number of castors (like on couches, sofa chairs etc) but the ones in the picture seemed to be the toughest ones I had. Using those due to the weight of the welder.

On another note.....remember the 6" steel pipe I brought home in March ? I moved some from the middle of the pile, put plastic in this "trough" and filled with water. I then put one of those trees you've seen me collecting and soak for 3-4 days. Makes peeling the bark off a snap !

Also got another neat log done. Still one day needs a coating, maybe something like Thompson water seal ? It will one day end up inside a pen as a roof support. Got bent as a young tree and grew in a circle.

Rain?   j10  We're about to get blasted with 10 inches of rain in 2 minutes again today, not to mention the "large" hail their calling for. Just like women........can't live with 'em, and can't live without 'em!    c49

jaime...born and raised on/with Dad's heavy construction (D-8s etc) plus building cars , dune buggies etc etc from a lad , all my life.

Good for you! My dad is the same way. If it can be welded together, or held with twine or something, he'll make it work. Interesting the things he comes up with! j2

Jbird, I will show you mine if you show me yours!

Here is a pic of my car a few years back, before the fender bender. It's still the garage and has not been repaired as of lately,   PS hope the pic goes through OK, never tried before
