Title: Egg with no shell
Post by: QuailLover22 on December 12, 2004, 11:44:13 PM
recently a bird layed an egg with NO SHELL! I thought I read something about this happening on this forum, but I can't seem to find it.

My birds have free-choice calcium and it only happened once, but I still want to know more about this condition.

Also, is this egg safe to eat? I fed the raw yolk (unfertilized, i just have 2 females) to my cat and she's still alive, but is it REALLY safe to eat?

An occasional "soft" egg is nothing to get concerned about.  A pattern of them indicates a number of possible problems with improper diet being foremost.  As to the safety of eating the eggs, with the exception of salmonella poisoning from the raw eggs, I know of nothing that should injure your cats. I figure most predators can accomodate this however since I'm not aware of a single one that eats anything other than raw food. Not aware of any that eats and retains the shells either so not having to mess with the shell would be a bonus.

Sorry for replieing late but with a chicken a soft egg may mean a first time layer or an occasional one.
