Title: Are Turkey poults stupid?
Post by: greyghost on February 29, 2008, 07:49:25 PM
I am expecting Blue Slates next week, I have heard the chicks have to be shown how to eat and drink. Do I need another bird (chick) to do this ? What is best, I have tame Coturnix Hens ,will it work to put a Hen in with the chicks so they have a learn-by-example bird?

In a word...... Yes...... That said, I had success simply dipping their beak in the water, the feed they found on their own.

Even wild poults are stupid, I've had them run between my legs out in the woods.

If domestic ones panic they will pile up, best to have a round brooder for them with the heat source in the center, and enough heat for all of them,

Dipping the beak works, they do seem to find the food on their own,

the number one best teacher I have found for all birds are Bantams. Chicks or hens.

I've got it! j45 My Coturnix chicks are 4 weeks, big enough, and they know where everything is.
