Excuse me Reeves, my comment was an attempt at some dry humor. Seriously, with distance shots, wind is a factor for any firearm.

I've never fired one but many people like the .17 HMR. They're known to have a range around 180 to 200 yards. The number one complaint I do hear is about the cost of the rounds.

I think your idea of 22-250 is a better choice. you would have the option of some distance shots with a punch.

The 6mm is known to get 800 yards + http://www.6mmbr.com/gunweek021.html

Needless to say - some other choices for all around rifles ( deer to varmints )

Rocket Launcher would do a great job also, it's impossible to miss your shot  s020

.22 Long Rifle is great for practice, but I still prefer .270 and 12 gauge (okay 12 gauge isn't a rifle, but it's still my favorite!!!) s020

I have had a 6mm for about 20 years now, it's the one I prefer for varmints.  It does take down deer without a problem but the 7mm is my all around favorite

Hi Reeves,I have a 17.It's very accurate out to 200 yards.Fine for crows that far,but I'd limit chuck shots to about 150 and wouldn't shoot a coyote with it unless it was a head shot under 50. How about a 17 or 221 fireball. Remington chambers the model 700 in them.Nice rounds and they don't foul the bore anywhere near as bad as the old 17 Rem.You can even get it in a model 7,thats the carbine model, nice and small for the wife. My buddy has a 221 and has sledge hammered coyotes out to 160 paces with it.Very little recoil, you can see the hit in the scope.I'm going to get the 17 fireball this summer. Nick

I've got a marlin .17 Mach II  I love it.  But if i was going to shoot coyotes I would definatly get the .22 mag.  There is a round out there that shoot right there with the .17 HMR it is tapered just like it and has the same range.

For small game I personnally use a .17 Mach 2. It will destroy crows and squirrels at 75-100 yards. For bigger game and longer ranges I use a 7MM/08. Love both of these rifles. Oh yeah, the 17 is a CZ and the 7MM/08 is a Remington 700.

Thanks for all the ideas....but I've trained all my Coyotes to stay out 300m and beyond. Very rare now for them to come in closer.....till the pups start to wonder around. I teach them fairly fast

So far it looks like a thumbs up for the .17HMR to replace the .22 BLR.
The 22-250 Browning A-Bolt will be the longer range one she can shoot with confidence at the longer ranges. On calmer days anyway.

Today I would be hard pressed to hit anything at 300m + as the wind is howling big time ! Hard to dope the wind when it's gusting to about 80km + at times. Would be easyier with the 300 WM for sure ! But out of ammo for it. Gotta make a city trip.....

AK-47 at 300m  the coyotes would appreciate that.  They could sit out there and laugh, then meander off, unscathed!

Interesting that someone from California would choose a Communist assault weapon as opposed to a U.S. made defensive weapon, such as the M-16, AR-15, or Armalite AR-10T.  The Aramalite is available in .243 Winchester, which would be really nice when those brush dogs won't line up for you!

i have a remington 30-06 and it does fine on about everything and makes big nasty holes with 150 to 185 grain rounds. so wounding isnt a problem unless you cant shoot! s020
