I live some distance from a supplier of chicks (bw and pheasant). What are the advantages and disadvantages of receiving my chicks through the mail?

  You know you're only allowed three, right?   

  Advantages?  You have someone else to blame for the dead ones?

  That, and you don't have $5 per bird invested in them.  I think there are probably suppliers closer than you think.  It's just a matter of finding them.  Check with the bureaucracy that issues permits, and even your local game officer.  No more than you need at one time, there should be someone who will hatch a few extra, for you.  There are a couple of good Pheasant growers in southern Ks. and some Quail suppliers in OK., that have a good reputation.  Anyone who can get them to you in 24-36 hours should be fairly safe.  There is one supplier in Santa Anna, but that may be farther than So. Ks.

Slider, I could not agree more. There is a satisfaction to be experienced when you have a chick hatch.
 If you set 100 eggs at a time ( or more ) the wait is so much fun. Then, one day they pop like pop-corn.
 Then you realise you have alot of mouths to feed. And your'e all
