Title: christmas tree
Post by: jaime7997 on January 05, 2009, 07:58:58 PM
So, I put a tree in with the birds on Saturday and they don't really seem to be hanging out in it... To those of you that have done this, do you stand the tree up or lie it on it's side? I have it standing up right now. I think maybe I need to trim some bottom branches off so they can get under it better. I don't know... Just looking to see how you all did the "discarded Christmas tree" thing... Thanks!

Lay it on it's side on the wire floor.  I do it all the time with cedar trees I cut from the fields and fence rows.  You can also put prop the trunk a couple feet up against the side of the pen to lift the tree some on one end letting the top of the tree rest on the floor.

It not only gives the birds something to pick at, it provides a hiding place, and will groom their feathers as they walk through it.  by the time I remove it, the birds usually have stripped all the green and bark from it.

It wasn't used... We know a guy that has a tree farm locally and he gave me a couple trees that they had cut and didn't sell. I hope to be able to get some from him throughout the year. Castoffs, misshapen ones, etc... Just wish I had thought of it sooner than a month before Christmas when he was so busy. But, better late than never.

Hey jaime,

I'm next door to a Christmas tree farm myself.  Since I have a ground pen , I put a little straw on the trees, the BW's will get up in there and roost at different levels where they make "beds" in the hay/straw.

Did somebody leave? Did I miss something??
I think I'm going to trim some branches from the bottom of it and put some more hay under there. And maybe some in the branches themselves! Thanks Charlie!

Try both, but try putting an ample amount on the tree itself and kinda shove some down inside of it.  It works great, although you can get a build up of droppings and will have to dispose of the tree, clean it or whatever, depending on amount of birds'

I need to do that... Although I went out last night to feed and stuff and some of them were actually in the house part of the pen. I was shocked. And some were under the tree I think. One actually jumped down from one of the low branches! He was perching in there somewhere. Made me happy to know they were at least getting out of the weather.

If your pen dimensions allow, you would get a larger usable area of shelter by laying the tree on it's side.  If they are already using it, that might upset them, a little, now.  Over all, it seems evergreen trees, and trimmings, and shade screen, are better utilized by game birds than  shelter houses.

Tell me about it! Their food is in the house and I think if it weren't for that they would never go in. BUT. You all told me that from the get-go. Your'e so smart...;)
I may put theo ther tree  in there too on its side and see how they do with it. If I get ambitious. It's supposed to come up a big snow this weekend so I should get on it...

Not yet... I know. Procrastinator. Had to get tires on the car this morning and our new mattress was delivered this afternoon. Still need to get on the bird care....
But I'm figuring my trip to Zanesville to meet my college roommate for lunch tomorrow is out of the question... 6 inches of snow just doesn't sound fun to drive an hour in. grr....

I finally got around to adding some hay in and around the tree today. I think they appreciate it...;) Some of them may see their little quail lives flash before their eyes tomorrow. If it doesn't snow too much Robert and our friend Brian may take some to release to see how things go with the dogs. I'll keep ya updated!

jaime,

I think you should start raising pheasants. More meat for a table fare.

Here is one of my creations:

(4)Stuffed Rolled Pheasant Cutlets, wrapped in peppered bacon. The balance of those two cock birds went into the freezer to make soup. j2

Yes, we have snow. And lots of it! Gotta work midnight shift tonight and I'm not looking forward to the drive there.

That looks delectable too! I originally wanted to raise pheasants but decided I didn't have the room to keep any number of birds worthwhile.
And as far as the release site, stupid boys didn't take the camera. I must have to babysit them closer.

Mike, I was out yesterday collecting birds for the WV Dept of AG to do the normal 90 AI swab testing in 14* temps with snow flurries. It took us 2 hrs and I froze my a$$ of. Last year on this date it was 56* and sunshine. Where is Al Gore and his Global Warming when you need him.

Here's your recipe kids!!!
Copied from the email he sent me....
Anybody offering a hunt in return for the secret recipe!  (This is his request, not mine!!)

It's simple.  Lightly pepper the birds, wrap in one slice of bacon, stuff with your favorite stuffing mix and put the extra around the birds in a round dish.  I had to play with the temperature from 350 to 400 and ended up cooking them until the internal temp was 165 degrees.  Remove from oven, drain the bacon grease and chow

Went out today and took these pictures of some cedars I have in the flight pens.  Well, I did remove the one that's been stripped.

They eat the bark and all ?
Title: Re: christmas tree
Post by: Bird Brained on January 18, 2009, 06:42:19 PM
I wouldn't say they eat it.  They really just pick and pull it apart.

It definitely keeps them occupied and from picking at each other (won't really make them stop picking each other though if that has already started).

I've experimented with other items too.  I've put a full square bale of straw or hay inside the pen and they will have the entire bale torn apart within a week (depends on how many birds are in the pen).

Bad part about the straw or hay bales is that it ends up under the elevated wire floor as it falls through and it really needs cleaned out as it takes quite awhile for it to decompose on its own.

Food store in town had a bunch of X-mas trees left over. I picked some up (free) and put one with each pair of Valley Quail. Haven't seen them since !
I can see them, if I sneek up and look through the window though.
Much calmer inside now when doing water food etc.
