Hi My name is Tonya Kent and I need help. My neighbors dog (a labrador retriever) brought me an egg the other day. I thought it was really cute until it hatched in my hand. Now I am the proud Mommy of something!! I think it may be a hungarian/Grey partridge but I'm not sure.
Right now, I am feeding S/he poultry starter because believe it or not, I can not find wild game bird starter here in Montana. I also added a little bit of hard boiled egg yolk this evening and that was a huge hit. We are staying warm at 95 degrees.
If there is anything else that I should know, I would really appreciate any advise that anyone has for this little baby. Also if anyone knows what it is, that would be awesome!! The picture was taken at day 2. Horton should be about 5 days old now.
Thank You
Tonya and Horton

I can't help you ID the critter, but that feed should be 28-30% protein. Make sure it is drinking water out of something drowned proof. I may be wrong, but I'd be careful with the "lower the temp 5 degrees per week rule" with just one chick. Simply because it doesn't have anybody to warm up too at all if it where to get chilled.......does that make sense?
Interesting story on the hatch I must say.
s016 and good luck.

I guess we might have to wait until it grows up (hopefully) and see what it turns out to be.
Thanks for all of your help

Except if it's an odd chicks, it's sure it's not a guinea or a coturnix, it's an Hungarian, what was the size of the egg? You are lucky to have this! s80

Hi Frank!
I talked to my neighbor and he said that the dog had been bringing him eggs all week! He thinks he brought me the last one because he knew Dad wasn't doing a very good job at raising the other eggs (he was throwing them away) s020
The egg was tan/beige colored and about an inch in size. Does that make sense?
Tonya
-
tan beige (olive) in color Hun Egg!!

Ok! So now that we think we know what he is j41, is there anything special that I need to know/do to keep happy and alive j1?

How old are they when they start getting "real" feathers. I think Horton will be a week old on Monday.
-
I hope that Horton won't meet any snakes since he is living on my kitchen counter at the moment 0009!!
Tonya
-
In about another week..if it is a week old it should be getting some wing feathers now..
-
You fellers never saw a Western Meadowlark, afore?
-
I really thought it was a Road Runner chick, but did not want to say that!!!

Hungarian are lovely little birds.
I'm surprised how the chicks are looking like Black-backed gull chicks... Enjoy it!
do not let it make friends with any snakes!!!!!!!
With cats also! Mine have been killed by a s53 cat s2

Horton is getting bigger every day! And boy is he attached to me. I took him outside for the first time this afternoon to take some pictures but I couldn't get far enough away. Had to go get the small lense.
Steve! If he is a road runner, it would be the first documented one in Montana!!!! s020 s020 s020
Here are a couple of pictures from today.

I'm jealous, you have an Hungarian chicks and it's FREE! s80
Frank
-
Hi Frank!
It sure is fun to have a "free" hungarian chick. We are having a heat wave here today (95 degrees outside and 110 in the house), the only person that is enjoying it at all is Horton s020
He is running around his little tupperware box and eating like crazy. He sure is cute!
I wish my husband felt the way you do about Horton. He thinks he's cute but told me I was going to have to let him go and be free s176 That's going to be hard to do when he is so imprinted on me. I guess we'll see what happens s80

One more picture of the cutie pie 0009

That actually sounds pretty good. If I get him all grown up, will you keep him safe and sound for me? I'll ship him to you or you can make a trip to Montana s020 That way, you can keep me posted on how s/he is doing!! j41
-
Well, that was a joke, but if you are able to get the papers to ship it to Canada, sure!!! But I seriously don't think it will be possible.
Frank
-
Oh Bummer!! Well, it sounded good. I guess my husband is just going to have to build me that coop!! Or, I'll turn into this c29 That will show him.
Talk to you soon Frank. I'll keep sending photos so you can see how s/he's doing!!
Tonya
-
I would really enjoy to have this chicks but as I'm in Canada it would be a lot of problems...
Thanks
Frank
-
Well Uncle Frank! Unless I can suddenly perform miracles, I'll just have to throw a tantrum c29 and get that coop.
Tonya
-
Why don't you start keeping them, for the moment I've tried many breeds of chickens and birds species and they are my favorite from that list :
-Laying chickens
-Coturnix
-Bobwhite
-Chukars
-Valley Quail
-Gambel's
-Scaled
-Hungarian
-Mandarin Ducks
-Silkies (chickens)
-Mixed bantams
-Button Quails
-Budgies
Hungarian are lovely little birds, imagine, mine were tame and I got them at 2 months old, imagine yours! Raised by an human, anyway, if it is released, it will be the first one to be shot when hunting will begin... s47
Here's a link to one of my two males (the tamest one), I was ''playing with him'' and loved to be take in my hands (I think it's the only birds I got who was like that) : http://www.gbwf.org/francolin/perdix05.html
The only thing is to keep them in pair during breeding.
Have a nice night, it's now 23:05 here and I start to work at 6h AM...

They're all the same, huh Chuck?
-
::)
Well........not completely.......but torture is torture regardless!
I'm just glad that I run things at my place and don't have to deal with such nonsense, although I can not forget the days when things where different.
^-^

You often remind me of Walter Williams. Are you he? Related?
-
I work at a vet clinic and have been taking Horton to work with me every day. I was thinking today that I better keep him, because he is going to be so use to barking dogs, he will never be scared of them.
Tonya
p.s Horton is now starting to get wing feathers j41!!
-
Cool!
Frank
-
How old should Horton be before I turn off his heat lamp and blanket? I had to move him out of his tupperware and into a small animal cage with the wire over the top today. He jumped out of his box at work and decided to go walk about. He ended up coming under the door and into our treatment area. It's a good thing he turned left instead of right or he would have ended up in the dog kennels. ???
Tonya

down from 5 degrees (F) per week until 70 or a good feathering. You can put it in a box adapted for chicks. You take a Rubber maid box and do 2 big holes, put wire over and lamp over on of the wire piece.

I am a vet tech!! Haven't looked at your profile yet... Where do you live? I took a chick and a quail to work. Everyone was very interested... Something different! Good luck!!
-
Hey Jaime! Us vet techs need to stick together!! I live in Bozeman, MT. How about you? I'm sure that I am way older than you are. Right now, I work in a clinic that sees cats, dogs (small animals) and horses. Everyone thinks Horton is so cute. They really like seeing how fast he is growing. I think he has tripled in size in a week. He's starting to look real shabby right now because his big boy feathers are starting to come in.

This is a very silly question, but do Huns take baths? 0009

Dustbath

When do I start putting sand in his box? He'll be a two weeks old on Monday

Last week !
-
???Ok, so I guess I'll go get some. Is there anything special that I should use?
Tonya
-
Naw, just plain, fine sand (well mixed sizes is OK), for now. If there's any chance of cat, or chicken poop in it, I would wash it in bleach water, and rinse it, since he's so special. Won't have as much dust for him, but won't have e-coli, either.
-
Thank You!! Horton really is special. I had to move him to a bigger bin today. He was jumping out of his little one s80 He's starting to settle down a little bit now. He was pretty nervous at first. I put some electrolytes in his water just in case. Horton is also a really good watch dog :police:
He woke me up this morning when my niece came home and turned on her bathroom light. s020 s020 s020 He was doing his little distress call. So, I got up, settled him down and everything was fine
Tonya
-
I found some sand in our mailbox holder!! Will Horton know what to do with it? I rinsed it in bleach water first.
Tonya
-
If he doesn't, he really is special (in the educational sense). hat sand was probably OK the way it was. I was just remembering the "lumps" in the last sand I bought to mix cement.
-
It may be me that is "special" 0009 Do I put the sand in like a bowl or just on the bottom of his cage?
Tonya
-
A cigar box, or small crock, that is hard to turn over. A soup bowl would flip, too easily.
-
........or a frisbee. We give those things away at work and you just can't imagine the uses for them when raising birds. Feeder lids, dust/sand baths, sod holders, etc., etc.
-
I had a teeny tiny pie plate that I put in his house. He is now living in a guinea pig cage that is 24" long by 12" wide. He seems to be doing pretty good.
