I am new to keeping quail and the hens are laying eggs like crazy. My wife wants to try and hatch the eggs to add to our small covey. HELP. What is a good recreational incubator and where can I get one. Also what is a good piece of reading I should get to learn how to brood etc.

We were using the Hova Bator when we first started but the only problem is that you can not really control the humidity very well. We can across a Leahy cabnet type incubator in I asked if he used it and he said no so I asked if we could have it he said yes. The old man wants to get a sportsmans incubator they are not that expensive and if you don't want to mess with turning eggs I think they are automatic. Personally I like to hand turn the eggs and to me its just one more thing that can break down. Anyway...We purchased a book called the Game Bird Breeders Handbook. It is good but very technical (of course written by doctors etc) but it is a very handy resource. But...the best information you can get is from this site if you can get people to read and reply to your posting. There are many folks on this site who love this "hobby"? and who are more than willing to impart their knowledge. I am 3 years into raising Bob Whites and still learning.

If you can, go for a foam incubator with turner and fan. I have used several of them.

I use the Little Giant styrofoam incubator with turner and fan. I get pretty good hatches with it incubating in a closet away from the central heating/air. That's with local eggs too...not shipped.
