Title: I am BACK!
Post by: Chukar Breeder on May 23, 2007, 04:31:17 PM
Well, I am back from a family vaction to Washington DC and Virginia it was all for American History. We went to the Capital, White House, Gettysburg, Mounticello, Yorktown, Holocaust Museum, a bunch of other memorials and at least 10 other places. I am so Happy to be back. I have some silver eggs that are going to hatch in about 3 days and some goldens eggs a few days after.

Make sure you do not keep them in the same area. Silver chicks are not likely to treat the Goldens well.

Don't worry Reeves I am going to keep them seperate. I have 2 different bloodlines for both the goldens and the silvers. Once they get a week old or so I am going to combine both bloodlines and put ziplocks (the smallest I could find) of different colors to tell the difference. Has anyone ever used ziplocks as leg bands?

I use zip ties all the time on my poultry chicks... really helps in keeping straight what chicks come from what birds; certain color = a certain line of birds. You can also use right leg for one line of birds and left for another, while using the same color. That gives you twice as many options.

When putting them on, tighten them JUST enough where they will not come off unless some real pulling is done to them. This way, they will last longer. Also, if made too tight, the leg will grow around them and the bird will develop with a "dent" or indentation in its leg. Good luck with the hatch, CB.

hi,
just one quick question to Chukar Breeder, how did you go on vacation and leave eggs to be incubating by themselves , i would never do that, and you expect some to hatch in a coupl of days

Well, I willl put it this way. I am still under 18  so I had to go on this vaction. I would perferabaly stay home to watch my eggs, but since I had to go I set my eggs so that I would not have to wait another month for my eggs to hatch. In MN cold wheather hits in October so I want my birds fully feathered by then. Anyway when I got home the temp. in my incubator was the same when I left. (My incubator is a pretty good one and has an automatic turner)

hi,

what about humidity, what if their wasn't any water in the incubator while you were gone?  That would effect your hatch rate!!

I know, but I loaded up the humidity tray and it should of been OK hopefully. I wish I did not have to go on vaction and have egg set a t the same time but I really had no choice.
