Hi all! Several of you have PMed me asking about the status of my miracle baby, Lucky the button quail, who survived crazy temperature fluctuations and a 20 day hatch cycle when the 10 other eggs he was with didn't.

I'm happy to report that he turns 4 weeks in 2 days and is really the cutest and most fun pet my family has ever had.  We officially moved him into a 24"x12" rabbit cage tonight (it is about 2 feet high - I will eventually get him some taller digs) and he seems like he likes it much more than the cardboard box brooder I've had him in for nearly the last month.   I know he is a little young to be taken out of the brooder, but I put a lamp right on the top. He seemed really lonely stuck in that box all the time. He is VERY social! And yes, I've determined that it is a boy - he makes that distinctive little "pew-pew-pew!" call the boy button quails make. He is very healthy and active and his birdsong is really lovely to listen to. He is doing great!

I am hatching a few more button quail eggs at the moment; hopefully these will turn out better than the last batch and Lucky will have some company later this summer.  (Don't y'all worry - I've read all about how to introduce a new bird into a pre-existing group. I'll be careful!!)

Anyway, thanks all for the advice and support. This is a great community and my little boy and I are really enjoying our new hobby as well as our new and very sweet little pet!
