Grower feed can be reduced in protein to around 20% after about 5 or 6 weeks to fatten them up.  My breeders get 24-25% making sure I have enough calcium in the mix to give me shells.  You can feed growers a higher protein, but they will fatten up quicker with more carbs.  Seems it works on people too!!!

I'd have to ask the moderator, but you may need to enable Java for the spell checker?  I'm pretty sure it runs from one of the "helper" applications.

I have never witnessed nor seen in print, such a disgrace in the English language before in my life. This is also after he/she had the opportunity to edit his/her post.

For the life of me, I just don’t know what woundering is. Care to elaborate?

WOW???????   and we get to spend 8-12 thousand dollars a year per student on education simply amazing

Yes, simply amazing isn’t it, and for a 14 year old too boot! I would be ashamed to continue posting until I have learned the English language to some extent, and some form of proper spelling or at least spell the words phonetically.

I would suggest that next time you either decide to start a new topic or reply to a post/topic, to use your computers Microsoft Word program to correct the Spelling and Grammar .

Moderator? There are no moderators here. Never have and there is really no need for them. This is a self cleansing site.

Are you also trying to confuse him/her even more? Paying attention in school should be the first order of business and second, he/she should be using Microsoft Word to write his/her replies to posts or starting new topics. Once he/she has done this, all that is left is to use the spelling and grammar tool bar for any corrections.

John,

You have been promoted to editor in chief / rewrite editor for the spelling/grammar impaired.

What part of Microsoft Word don’t you understand? You need to spend more time with your schoolwork then worrying about raising game birds.

You should have type this in Microsoft Word prior to posting!! You get an F for spelling and grammar along with punctuation. You don't even get an "E" for effort.

JohnInDixon,

John. would you do a rewrite on this?

In a conversation with Bambi, Thumper's mom gently reminds him of a rule.  Thumper quotes the rule, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all!"

It comes down to common decency.

Thank you for the Thumper Rule!  My responses to 14yoquailfarmer were not intended to be a flame, but more on the communication side. If he/she cannot communicate on an entry level at the age of 14, he/she will more then likely never be able to as an adult on any BBS.

If he/she thinks they have it hard now, try going to some other BBS and see what happens. He/she is getting off easy here.

Not really sure why these goofballs feel they need to pick on a kid looking for answers, I guess you have to wonder about where they are from?

It's been posted before, but you should lower protein after the first 3 or 4 weeks for coturnix to 20-22% to put the weight on.  You should also restrict the light available to 10 hrs or so.  Lets them grow instead of getting ready to reproduce.

For my breeders, I keep the protein at 24-25% with at least 4% calcium for egg production.  I use a 20% chicken layer crumble with 1/3 Gamebird starter at 28% mixed in and a little soybean meal to getting the protein up.

You should read Pheasant Hollow Farm's post on knowing the laws of your state to keep yourself out of trouble.  I would suspect Missouri has laws in this regard.

Good luck.

I posted a statement after reading a post that made no sense whatsoever and was so full of mistakes that I was shocked reading it !!! I  will make the statement again I am tired of seeing my tax dollars go down the toilet if by the age of 14  you cannot put a simple sentence together ,than what are we teaching kids today  ???

Just for general information I split my time between NJ ( where I run a very profitable demolition co and a construction co that I started 35 years ago   by myself) and NY (where  I  own a 600 acre farm and raise gamebirds

Though I am quite sure my two cents worth isn't worth two cents here yet, I'm with Woodenegg!  Taking a shot is one thing, but keeping it going for a week is yet another.  I would almost expect that from a 13 or 14 yr old, but not from business owners as some of you apparently are.  Woodenegg, thanks for the rare (at least lately) display of maturity, your posts and input are what will keep forums like these popular.  The ones that contain nothing but sarcasm will be visited once and be forgotten.
14Yoquailfarmer...stick with it.  While I may be new to this board, I am not new to raising birds.  Feel free to PM me with any questions.  If they are on a topic I can help you with, I will certainly do so.  Do not be discouraged by folks who never seem to have anything positive to say, the world is full of them.

Yes somewhere along the line we have lost the cohesiveness that we once had. The "Love."

To stay on topic, I just feed Starter feed high in protein idefinitely. Then when they mature, I would just add high in carb. cracked corn, milo, wheat. For breeders, just add calcium supliment like oyster shell grit.

Just so you'll know/maybe understand why these people are not pleased with this person and don't have much tolerance for them. Here is about the 14 year olds 10th post on this forum:

i agree more than any of you know me my self will be a licenced falconry soon and if you think that a 22 or a 17 cal is what you need to fix a hawk you a retard and maybe need to shove those up your A$$ to get the picture here and that swgt you have you shouldn't because those are only to be use in the sport of falconry not for some hick farmer to use to catch and kill valuable birds of prey and i hope you lose business for saying some thing stupid like that all you inbreed bastard that use leg hold traps on post sit on them cause your worth less and i hope some one nock some sense into you and learn you fact before you open your hick mouth      (end quote).

There is a thing called respect. You got to give it to recieve it. This person blew themselves out of the water from the word "go"! I never spoke to anyone in this manner at 14 years old or any other time for that matter, and then turn right around and ask for their advice. They should have been thrown off of this forum immediately in my opinion.

Sorry to disagree, but I do believe that this post has or should i say...."should" have been a very positive learning experience for one person in particular if nothing else. That alone would make it all very useful in all aspects of life.

Title: what has happened to this place?
Post by: jbobs on June 11, 2006, 03:59:55 PM
I was just poking around, but I felt compelled to add my two cents to this, wanted or not.

I started raising quail when I was 14 years old as well. I had no idea what I was getting into and I had a lot of really stupid questions that most of us experienced game bird raisers take for granted. I found all the information I needed from the people on this forum. They were all very patient with me and answered my questions without any quams.

That was 6 years ago. I am now 20 years old and have successfully bred and raised 5 different species of quail, plus chickens. I have reared Turkies to maturity a number of times. Six years ago I was a 14 year old kid, scared to death of all you expert guys, and now I've come leaps and bounds from where I was before. I do not claim to be an expert, but the encouragmeent I recieved from this site and the support of others made game birds a lifelong interest for me.

Now, unlike our new 14 year old kid, I have always excelled in spelling and grammar and I have already started to pursue writing professionally. That doesn't exempt me from making a few mistakes here and there, I'll add. My fingers type faster than my brain knows how to control them. 14 year old here can't write to save his/her life, that's obvious. What's not obvious about me is that I can't add or subtract to save my life. I still count on my fingers. It's just the way I am. I took easy math in school, and because of that, I still managed to get straight As. You can't see my horrible math skills, but if you could, would you make fun of me for it? You might say, "Come on, Jessi, you STINK at math! This is grade 3 stuff!" and we'd both laugh about it. Some people are good at some things and not at others.

But whether he can spell or I can add shouldn't affect just how successful we can be as game bird enthusiasts.

This 14 year old is interested in cultivating game birds AND training raptors. Training raptors is always something I've wanted to do. If this kid is interested in animals and is taking on projects like this on his own instead of vandalizing, stealing, and doing drugs (which he may or may not do, I don't know him, but from my general experience kids who have hobbies are less likely to do this kind of stuff) then I commend him for that. I wouldn't want to be the one to show him that adults will call you on every mistake you make and make things tough on him. I want to be the one to encourage him. It's better than having another dead head lost cause kid on the street with nothing better to do than get drunk or high. He might not be able to spell or write even his own name, but he has ambition. If he didn't have ambition, he wouldn't be here asking you guys for help.

Granted, that post he made was absurd and inappropriate, and hopefully someone explained to him an an adult way that this is not how you deal with differences in opinion. This is a professional forum, and our profession is game birds. Kids have to learn what professionalism is, and there's a few people here that, in my opinion, are not setting a very good example.

There's nothing wrong with saying stuff the way it is. I believe that it's the best way, myself. But "the way it is" for you isn't nessesarily "the way it is" for others. There's nothing wrong with saying what you want, it's a free country. If what you want to say is rude or disrespectful, say it, just remember that people are going to label you. I have the foulest mouth of anyone I know, but you'd never know that by reading a piece of my writing or upon first meeting me. I can be so hick and redneck it isn't funny sometimes, but in public, when surrounded by professionals, I strive to professional.

Please, everyone, give this a thought. It's just my thought, you can take it or leave it. I won't hold it against you if you disagree.

To the kid, and any other kids out there: don't give up on things that you enjoy, things that you're good at, or things that challenge you. Keep trying, and listen carefully to all people. It doesn't mean you have to agree, just listen. You'll never please everyone, but try your best. Don't take it personally if you can't. Sometimes you deserve the flak that's thrown at you, and if you do, swallow your pride and take it, and learn from your mistakes. If you don't deserve it, brush it off. It'll keep comming for as long as you live.
Title: Give it a rest

I'm somewhat guilty of it myself, but I think everyone had given it a rest until you put it at the top of the page with your first post, how about we give it a rest? I was hoping to see this baby run off the bottom of the main page. Every respectful person is welcome here I believe. Nice first post by the way.........welcome.
