Title: What are Spanish Quail?
Post by: Ranger on March 19, 2007, 07:54:48 PM
Hi,
This is my first visit to this forum. So forgive me for the stupid question.

I raise Coturnix and Bobwhite because I like to keep it simple or at least stay with what I know. I have never even thought of trying anything else.

I picked up some eggs last month pretty cheap and was told they were Spanish quail. I never heard of them.  I live in Ohio so could this even be possible to have Spanish quail eggs at this time of year?

I incubated them the way I do the bobwhite and only had about a 30% hatch rate. The chicks that did make it, after a couple weeks I noticed that their legs are turned all funny.

What could cause this?

It could be several things, too much inbreeding, poor nutrition of the breeding stock, genetics to mention the ones that come first to mind.

Thank you very much for your answer.

Inbreeding was my first thought , but I have never actually seen any results of it. I guess that was a complete waste of money.

Thanks again for your help.
