Title: quails ranging?
Post by: birdlover on June 04, 2006, 02:12:38 PM
hi,
Do you know of any type of quail that i can let it go on my lawn without it running away?  i'm not allowed to keep chickens, but i might be allowed for quail, since they dont make too much noise.  i just want to be able to let the quail on my lawn and watch it forage on my lawn.  Is there any type of quail that can do that?

These don't go real far away, and they don't eat or poop much;  but they're boring to watch.

My previous 18 Jumbo Bobwhites which I raised for meat, they were very very tamed and docile. In their pens, they would take greens from my hand. (Mind you, my backyard is enclosed with brick walls) Once I experimented taking a pair out of the cage. They stayed mostly around the cage area and free roamed my backyard. On the 4-5 day, a cat caught the female so I put the male back in the pen. If it wasn't for predators, I think I would have had a few successful backyard free roaming Bobwhites.

so you may have a better chance if they are tame and you keep the majority in the pen and just let a few loose.

You might enjoy reading the book "That Quail Robert" about a hand reared bobwhite. It's a nice read about a bob raised as a pet.

hi,
i'm going to find a place that sells Jumbo Bobwhite hatching eggs.  And i'm going to hatch them in my incubator.

Are you ready for them ?

Have pens built for the extra males ?

Rearing pens ?

What are you going to do with them if you have to winter them ?

Hi,
Well, i don't think I'll hatch them maybe in about 3 to 4 months. And I'm  going to get about 20 eggs.  I'm raising them mainly for the ranging personality and also for their eggs.  I used to have chickens a couple of years back, but i had to give them up, when i found out that they were both roosters, i'm not allowed to keep roosters that crow since i live in an urban area, i  miss them very much. And i would enjoy raising a type of bird that has the roaming instinct as the chickens that  i miss the most.

You likely need a permit to release any Game Bird where you are.

NO Game Bird will do what you want.

Sounds like you live in a place not well suited for any birds....My advice is to forget the whole idea.

 hi,
what if i build a high fence or put a net, where i want the birds to roam?

Make sure the fence reaches 10-20,000 ft. in hight. Beacons will be required on each post.

Make sure that the net has at least half inch holes in it so that you don't diminish the ranging qualities out of them.
