Title: Weather
Post by: Reeves on December 13, 2009, 04:55:30 PM
Steve (Pheasant Hollow) had a weather topic going. Thought I'd fire one up again.
Due to the States on Fahrenheit and Canada being Celius, thought I'd post a picture of a thermometer.

Please do not post links to radar etc. It's a killer on us dial-up folks !

-26c wind chill with 13km/h wind is about -35c.

Record breaking cold tepms have been set in Edmonton in this cold snap.

Good news, it will start a warming trend later today, with temps going up to around the zero mark.

Chris - good thing you are getting the rain ! Even a wee bit up here would cause major problems !

Hey Reeves,
I used to live outside of Bozeman Mt.  And people probably think i'm crazy, but I miss the dry cold of the Rockies.  I remember one morning when it hit -59F in my yard (true temp, not wind chill) -40 was not uncommon.   Everything was so still and beautiful on those super cold days.  Now After many years of living out of the country in the tropics, I've settled in Tennessee and this wet cold is terrible!  Give me dry cold like what I used to have in Montana or what you have in Alberta over this any time!
Title: Re: Weather
Post by: Reeves on December 19, 2009, 08:35:43 AM
I know what you mean red ! I lived in Sandspit, B.C. (Queen Charlotte Islands) for three years. Never been so cold in my life , and the temp was never colder than -10c !
I also lived in the Rockies for 7.5 years, at 6000' work camp. Used to sun tan next to 10' snow drifts !

Weather link this morning:  0c and dropping to -7c, then back up to -6c for the high.
I have to get a different link......

Hey!  It's cold down here in Tn.  We have not had a day above freezing in over a week and the weather is only supposed to get colder!  Last night down to abut 9 degrees F.  I think Reeves is shipping us his cold Canadian weather.  It is time for some warmth here in the south! All my flock are doing ok, but I'm tired of chipping ice and hauling hot water.

Hey  Reeves grab on to that jet stream and stop it.  Here in Texas had 6 inches of snow and they are calling for the coldest weather in 10 years. Wed night comming in and staying through Sat. 3 days below freezing for highs and single digits at night. But back to 50 on sunday. Birds don't know what to do.

It's still cold down her in the great state of Tennessee, but their is hope for warmer weather next week (and rain, yuck!).  Temps over the last couple of nights have gotten down to 5 degrees F. and we did have a trace of snow, but only an inch or two.  Sure am looking forward to warmer weather so I can finish my small parrot house.  It is just too cold out to do it now.  The picture is looking out my back door at my pens with their very cold birds.  Keep warm all!

OK no laughing by my northern buddies.
Here in Fort Worth Texas 2 days ago we had an all time record snow fall 12 inches in 1 day .
Disastrous for us.
Have Huns and Valley quail already laying.
Lost 1 flight pen that was built from 2in. PVC and 1 in. netting .
The weight broke 7 of the PVC arches.
Thank goodness no birds in it.
No satelite for internet or TV for for two days.
Just home from shoulder surgery, talk about stir crazy

Last 2-3 days has been raining as well. Good thing, as AB has been in drought conditions. Huge fire to the east (over 3000 Ha) is finally under control.

Some kid rolled a car about 2km to the north of me. Going too fast on a gravel road and came to a corner.
Of course, it caught on fire. Burned up a bunch of bush along a creek.....same one that runs along the front of my place. Good thing the wind was from the south that day. With all the dry fuel along it, it could have gotten to my place very quickly !

New Peacock male isn't fond of thunder though....."screams" at it every time  s020
Also at loud vehicles, ATVs, farm tractors....

So. Rain , for me , means another shop day. Will have to invent some new cannot do without "thingy".   s020

The Gators will be next!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why is that, they migrating trying to get away from the oil?   :-|  I don't doubt that any. I'm sure there has been one around from time to time. They'll never survive the winter up here....thank goodness! This being a college town, the students dispose of their critters when they leave for the summer. I've personally been involved in capturing a few boa constrictors that were in bad shape. It's no tellin what they've thrown out. Those lousy Canadian geese have taken up residence here the last 2-3 years, we've never had them living here in the past like they are now. Don't have any close to home, other than constant fly-overs, but the lakes around and the river running through town are loaded with them.  :x

You can keep the Gators down there!!......although the gator would probably put the hurts on geese??

Wild Boar invasion is more likely I think.  Have seen a few shows lately about those things, seems to be a huge problem down south. There's a few in Ohio already.  I here Kentucky is having a heck of a time with them, but they'll have a rough way to go getting across the Ohio river.   ^-^

This is only my second year here in the great state of Tennessee. I love it here but this heat is hard for this New England Yankee boy to get used to!
This year has been so humid (very southeast corner of the state) that when I go outside, the heat sucks the life right out of me. Since the summer began, it's been 100-106F with the heat index factoring in the humidity. Last year was hot, but not with this oppressive humidity.

This is such a beautiful state, but there are a few things I miss, like, living 20 minutes away from the Ocean, and those -10F New England winters!

All bird are OK.

All aviary top wire beat up bad.

Wife's Ranger (20,000 km on it) beat up real bad.

House beat up. Needs at least two new windows and a new sky light. Plus roofing and other vents.

Pole barn tin beat up bad. Roof, west side and north side.

Aviary builds took a beating as well.

Plants and trees took a beating.

In the full length video, you can see the golf ball sized hail bouncing 8+ ft. off of the ground !

My truck is OK......I was away working.

Insurance adjuster due today (Monday).
I was home for the weekend, rained out. Looked at all the damage.

Well, I don't know how long it will take to get there, but southern Alberta has gotten -36c temps this morning . So it is working it's way south.

My place only got to about -30c last night. No idea how it got colder down south.

Cold front moved north.

It has hit -44c so far this winter.

Work camp I was at made me park where I couldn't plug the diesel in.....it's been sitting a week now.
Supposed to warm up to -22c today. Should start now ?

I win the lottery, I'm moving to the States !

1+ inch of rain today in northwest WI.  10 degrees colder would have been 15" of snow, almost exactly a year after we got a heavy 15" snowfall last year.  I'll take the rain and warmer weather.  Burn less wood in the stove
