Well, it has been warm the last couple of days here. Received my first order of eggs last week and incubation has began for a new year.
Thought I would see what everyone is doing for the new season. I am really getting spring fever.
We are starting with 100 bobwhites, 400 chukar and 300 Valley Quail. No pheasant this year. Still have last seasons, feed eating, loud breeding, butt picking, mud smelling birds. s176 Anyway, back on topic.
So did our first candling today, out of the 106 bobwhites, 33 clears. Out of the 400 chukar, 86 were clears. All of which shipped. Of all my own Valleys, (33 of them) all were clear :cry:,.
Oh well, I will gather them again. Have not received the other Valley yet.
Not real pleased with all the clears. I do realize it is the beginning of the year and I do take my chances with shipped eggs. I may shoot them an email. I am not going to post whom I received the eggs from (hope I didn't mention it somewhere else in here :-o) I have had really good luck from these guys in the past and have great communications, don't want to burn that bridge. Or make them publicly look bad. But still disappointing.
Just sold the rest of my bobwhites for dog trials in Reno. So time to clean out the brooder house, clean and sterilize empty pens and get ready for the season to get underway.
So what does everyone else have in the oven, or is it just too cold everywhere but California and our 70 degree days t15

Nothing happening here as far as eggs go. Last year was a different weather pattern. Yesterday we had another 2.5 inches of snow and prior to the snow we had 1.5 inches of rain. The birds are starting to have Ice balls on their tails, and mud braclets on their legs.
This year so far has had more rain and more snow days then the last 3 years. It must be an Al Gore thing.

Sorry for the clear eggs, i'm sure you'll get better at it as the breeding season progresses. As for me i'm planning out my breeder pairs, just getting ready for spring, can't wait for another great season.

How are you sticking all these birds under your back deck? Show us,,,,,, The Faithfull Members' of "That Quail Place Forum.." We or I would like to see some clear pictures of your brooder and incubation facilities, if you don't mind, and it isn't any inconvenience to you.

I was just saying that next time she'll have better luck with the eggs.
First of all Pheasant Hollow Farm not all of my birds are under a deck, just 2 of my birds are, the rest of my birds (doves & quails) are in other aviaries/cages. Yes i do have an incubator, Lyon Roll-X works great, right now i have the incubator in storage in my garage but as soon as possible i will most certainly show you some pics. For a brooder i just use a cardboard box, i only hatch small numbers of eggs anyway so with the box i just use a clean one each year, to reduce spreading diseases between the chicks. The box works great.
I might be interested in the internship, how does that work, would i have to travel to another state say this summer?

Ahh, no I don't have any control over them. They are all shipped from back east. I don't think I have done anything wrong. Been hatching these things for years. Just the beginning of the season eggs is all, to be expected. If I get any better at it, I would be laying them myself.

If you are interested in an internship in Wildlife management/game birds’, raising/ propagation, it should be available to you in NY as a credit towards college. This is an A+ in the field of Wild Life Biology, to get a job within the NYS, DEC. although, your chances of the location of your choice is going to be slim to nun.
There is a hatchery that the NYS DNR uses for there rearing and distribution of there birds for all the locations that are listed on their pheasant stocking sites. The young pheasant chicks that are available to the NYS 4-H also come from this hatchery.
If you had any property and the facilities for rearing the pheasant chicks, you would also be able to enroll into this program. All you would have to show that you had the facilities of rearing them and the property for release, and as long as the property was open for hunting you would have no problem to get into the program.
……..and yes, if you are interested in an internship on wild life management/ pheasant rearing/ food plots, I am willing to have you come on down, at your own expense and also back to NY. I will house you and feed you. I do not expect any NY State reimbursement for the internship. Just check to see what you need for this to happen. What I am trying to say is........what is required on my end, for you to have this happen, and you get the college credit for it?
Besides, at my age, I am willing to help out the underdog looking to make a statement, or be able to advance to the next rung on the ladder.

Thanks Pheasant Hollow Farm, i will think that over, by the way i'm going to college next year, i will be going to a Culinary Arts School, i'm interested in becoming a Baking & Pastry Chef, but i dont want this chef thing to take over my life completely, i still want to be able to raise and enjoy birds i just have to make room for it. I'll probably open up a small bakery, like i said nothing real big, you guys are all welcome to come and enjoy yourself when i do get this to happen.

birdlover, not for nothing, forget about the baking and pastry. If you want to get into the food industry, start looking into the more sophisticated end of the culinary art of cooking.
