Title: Gas prices
Post by: Pheasant Hollow Farm on April 17, 2008, 06:32:39 AM
s53 Yesterday it was $3.49.9 gal and this morning it went to $3.59.9 and diesel has hit a high of $4.59.9 gal here in my area.

I can see my feed bill going up this month just for the transportation costs alone.

What's the price of gas and diesel in your area?

It's a  s53 buisness. But we would really like to pay 3.59 per gallons, here in Quebec it's $4,91 per gallon and the price are still rising up...

It's like a mafia!

At least for the moment I don't have a car but my parents do... I was heading to buy a new one, I'll go with a little one finally...

I remember when they use to raise gas prices by a penny at a time. Then they went by the nickle, now they dime ya to death every other day.

The Feds want to increase gas taxes, the States want to increase gas taxes all for the sake of road improvements. Who the  s53 is going to be on the roads when ya can afford the gas to drive, let alone get hassled by the county grass cops telling ya that your lawn needs to be cut.

Slider,

Remember the gas wars? Now we have price fixing. We have all the gas stations here in a 10 mile radius with the gas prices fixed at $3.59.9 gal Usually on Wednesday they all drop the price by $.05 per gallon.

Well yesterday, the price was $3.49.9 and never lowered the price. I told my wife  to check when she went to work this morning and give me a call. Sure as  c109, they raised it.

When they do lower it by $.05 they will normally raise $.05 above the starting point the following day. This time they just did the dime act.

My buddy just bought a CNG (natural gas) powered car - a Ford . Out here in Utah CNG is regulated and costs only .73 per gallon. Seems to be an even better idea than buying a hybrid car/suv. I am going to look into this.

Glad I sold my GMC Duramax last Summer. Filling up my Honda Accord is much more easy on the wallet.

In Utah today Unleaded is $3.19 and Diesel is $4.09.

It won't end until "Corporate America" has gotten all the money necessary to survive. While we common people suffer under the corporate greed, the CEO's get filthy rich. Who in America deserves the multi million dollar salaries? How much money is enough? Why has Exxon/Mobil had x number of consecutive record sales and record profits? They have got us where they want us.......under their thumbs.

BTW......... gas was 3.49 and diesel was 4.09 in east TN.

Something is going to have to give.  I drive a vw jetta and it STILL is killing me.  I am a contract computer nerd, i have to drive for a living.  I am going to have to raise my price per hour just to cover the gas.  I would hate to think what the truck drivers are going though.

I dont know how much longer i can make it doing what i do.  I would make less having a 8-5 job, but would not have to spend as much on gas.

It just really stinks....

For what it's worth, I have been in the gasoline business in Texas and Louisana for over 30 years. I am a fair sized distributor for several major brands and have a chain of convenience stores. Sell about 11 million gallons a month. All this is sort of like admitting I have leprosy these days. Frankly, it is a crappy business. I am in several other businesses (metal recycling, shopping center development) and all are better than the gas business. I haven't built a new store in years and don't plan to build anymore. Just a poor investment return.

Someone on this thread indicated there is price fixing. Over the years I have been to hundreds of oil seminars. Those guys can't agree on what kind of sandwiches to have for lunch much less get together to fix prices. Remember, it would take everybody, if just one does not, he gets all the business. For about 20 years, I pooled about 10 cents a gallon retail. During the year, I may pool 20 cents for a while, then 5 cents for a while but wound up around 10. Last year I actually pooled 15 cents and my net was less because of credit card fees. So far this year, I am around 16.7 cents pool. But if you come in and fill up on your American Express the credit card fee is around 15 cents a gallon. Try operating on that margin!  A lot more to it than this, you couldn't explain all there is to raising pheasants in one post. Still, not a great business to be in.

Steve; Are you telling us that in WV that the county cops etc can tell you when you have to cut your grass. that sounds more like socialism to me.
About the gas problem, I agree with everyone on this site.  We the small people are just that.  The (corps) could care less as they just want to make more money at are expense and I don't see it slowing down any to soon.  JB   c109

skipper3905,

That would be me. You can't tell me that price fixing doesn't happen. When you have 5 gas stations, BP, Exxon, Chevron, 2 Marathons all have the same price in a 10 mile radius and all 5 lower their price on Wednesday the same amount, only to up the price to the original selling price the following day.

15 miles from me over by my daughter house there is a BP station owned by the same people that is by me. It's the only station on the main drag for 7 miles. Their price is $.05 lower, and they reduce by $.05 on Wednesday as well, and up the price the following day.

I can understand the profit margin, but come on the price increases, 10 to 20 cents within days? if there is a wind storm or if you far^t, they are changing the price at the pumps on fuel that is still in the tanks before there is even a new delivery.  As soon as there is talks about an investigation in price fixing or Price Gouging, all of a sudden the price of gas drops, and the investigation issue becomes moot. It is a cat and mouse game.

Steve,

You are right, I can't tell you price fixing does not happen. I can tell you I have never seen it happen. As far as how prices react quick, I can tell you how we do it. I own 41 convenience stores. Each store has three key competitors we identify. If any of these key competitors drop the price we match immediately. Going up is slightly different, we wait until two go up then we go up also and give the third one 48 hours, if he does not go up we drop back down to meet his price.

On occasion, there can be a price fight when a new store opens or some other anomily. About a year ago, HEB Grocery and Walmart got in a price fight in Waxahachie, TX and got down to about 25 cents below my cost. I left that one alone. My sales dried up in my store and still have not got it all back. Just could not match the prices. Ours is a volume business, if we do not match prices we lose customers. Customers may like the new place and not come back. Each convenience store is a big investment, I can't let the volume go away and I can't lose money on gas and stay in business. Yes, I make money in the gas business, my stores are paid for and I run a efficient company but if I get to the bottom line with 1.5% of my sales (before federal income tax) I have had a great year. Not much room for mistakes.

Gas usually goes up or down with crude price. Over the last 20 days or so we have gone from $96 to $115 bbl. That translates to about 42 cents a gallon gas increase. Believe it or not, refiner margins are very low right now. That won't last. Oil is a pure supply and demand commodity. Usually as the price goes up, demand will slack and move price down. Problem is, world demand is going up and oil is a world commodity. China is using 50% more oil every year. Supply is restricted, Russia has a couple of big fields not developed and Canadian oil sands coming along but not much on horizon other than those. American has some big undeveloped fields in California, Florida coast, and Alaska but all off limits to drill. Supply is not meeting world demand and we will see $5 gas within a couple of years. Europeans have had $5 gas a long time and their per capita oil usage is about half of ours. They drive smaller cars, live closer to work, use mass transit and still have a comparable life style. Americans @$$$@ about gas cost but don't do the things that help drive cost down.

There are lots of price sensitive retail prices that react quickly. For example, if American Airlines drops or increases it's fare $20 from DFW to Washington Dullus, United will usually meet that price within the hour.

Around here the "franchise" sets the price, not the station/store owner/operator, in which make hardly nothing from the fuel sales.  As skipper said, credit card fees alone get more of the profits than any store owner.  Everyone should be using cash instead of giving these credit card corporations all the $$$.

It isn't the first time it's happened...........remember the 70's?

Oil companies=Government...........one of the same.
Corporations=Government.........one of the same.  Who owns who?   :-|
Can't tell the difference...........because there is no difference.

Everybody blames everything on the President, when it's Congress who is calling all the shots.  It's set up that way to divert attention elswhere.   ^-^

Slider,     I don't want to get into defending major oil companies but will point out a few things. Their profits have not increased 200% in one year. ExxonMobil is a pretty good barometer. Their proift was $41 billion in 2007, $39 billion in 06, $36 billion in 05, and $25 billion in 04. Most of the oil companies are publicly traded and audited financials are readily available on the web.

Just keep the conversation on Exxon. They paid $30 billion in Federal income taxes in 2007. 81% of Exxon's business comes from overseas. America is the only nation on the planet that requires domestic corporations to pay income taxes on foreign income. What is the solution? Tell Exxon to move to another country? Any country in the world would love to have them with the thousands of high paying jobs. They wouldn't mind that $30 billion in taxes either. Would not be a big chore for Exxon to move overseas, remember only 19% of their income is American anyway. That does not seem quite viable to me.

Then how do we get oil at a price below the world price? We need about 10 million barrels a day over what we produce ourselves. Well, we could declare war on Canada, Venezuela, and Mexico,  defeat them, occupy their countries, seize their oilfields and not pay them squat. That would give us a little over 10 million a day. That would do some damage to our international image, but we sure would be driving cheap.

Maybe just appeal to oil company CEOs to "do the right thing" and cut back on the price of gas. Most oil companies purchase most of their refining stock on the open market so that would not have a big effect but problem is, if I owned stock in any company in any industry and the CEO announced he was not going to make the most money he could for the shareholders I would dump that stock immediately. Every hedge fund, pension fund,  and mutual fund would elect a new board at the next annual meeting and that CEO would be history in a twinkling. Exxon is not the United Way, they are there to make the most money they can for their shareholders.

Maybe just pass a law that says gas can't be sold over $1 a gallon. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out you won't be able to buy gas but the price signs sure would look good. I was in Cuba a while back. They have government set prices on all commodities. Prices are cheap but gas stations don't have gas and grocery stores have empty shelves. Maybe a law saying flight ready pheasant can't be sold for more than 50 cents a bird. Hunters would love it but you would not sell them any  birds.

It is a RIPOFF and nothing more..and if you believe that CRAP that they put out then you are in it with them..They do not pay BEANS in income tax. The only thing that they pay is congress. I do not believe that propaganda CRAP that they put out...I was born at night...but not last night. It is a RIPOFF and nothing more..They get them CEO`s up there and ask them a few simple questions just for show and do not even put them under oath. Now what kind of CRAP is that...you just tell me...and like Steve said they all get together on the same day and raise there prices the same amount.. I just can`t believe that they can think that the American people are that stupid to believe that CRAP....

I too wondered why a wreck in the States would make our prices at the pump change....

I think this topic will get many people worked up.

But, "they" do not know where all the oil/gas is. If they did, there would be no more seismic work going on. All seismic companies have been very busy in Alberta. Now that Sask has a new Gov. they are now busy in Sask as well. Saskatchewan has as much, if not more oil and gas as Alberta. Their main problem is, they do not have the infrastructure to move the oil/gas out of Province......yet. Many people up here believe Sask will be the next boom Province. Already land prices have jumped 50% or more.
Last year and likely this year, the oil/gas companies have slowed down. Mainly to get contractors (drilling, construction, pipeline etc etc) to lower prices for the work done. However, you'll not see any relief at the pumps. It will only line their pockets more.

Don't know where things are headed. On TV there was a program about bio fuels. Only thing not covered, was the fact it takes more to make the stuff, than they get out of it ! But it makes them look like "they" are doing something for the global warming folks.
I don't expect to see much change in my life time.....except to pay more for fuels.

Slider,      Exxon net income in 2003 was  $21.51 billion, not $6 billion. These things are too easy to check.

Now, if you think the tax amounts Exxon reports are materially misstated, I am going to do you a big favor. Buy a few shares of Exxon stock, get with your personal lawyer, and go to any plaintiff class action firm (the LaRache firm is a very big one). Just tell them you bought your stock in reliance on the public statements and you want a generation fee for a class action suit. This one would be the grandaddy of all class action suits and any law firm would jump on it if there is anything to your idea. I was a CPA in a past life and can tell you this would be increadibly easy to prove or disprove. Exxon can show the canceled checks to the IRS or they can't. That simple!! By the way, you would also sue Exxon's law firm, audit firm, and investment bank. The IRS keeps a few auditors on companies Exxon's size all the time. They would have to be in on this gigantic conspiracy, too. Can get court authority to sue the IRS also.

Over the last few years we are talking about hundreds of billions of dollars in oil company bogus tax reporting that the government could go after. By the way, you would be eligible for a 5% fee from the government on recoveries.

If you are right, you will be a multimillionaire overnight and hero to all the masses. You will be on TV, have books written about you, and make more money than Bill Clinton on speaking tours.

Well, this is a interesting topic but a gamebird forum. I think I will drop out of this discussion here.

skipper3905,

This has as much to do with the game bird industry as does the feed supply, and the delivery of your product(game bird industry). I am not looking for you to make excuses for the oil and gas industry.

Beside, this is the general forum. It is not specifically meant only for the game bird industry, even though every thing can relate to it one way or the other.

Also, it all boils down to the consumer paying the tax on the fuels not the oil company. The oil company is only and agent for the collection.

If it wasn't for the tax subsidies the oil companies are getting they probably would relocate out of the U.S.

In one of your comments:

So then, who is initiating the new price that you all follow? This is still price fixing either way you look at it.

If I say to you, and three other gas stations just off the interstate, lets jack up the price $.02 a cross the board, are you going to do it? I mean what the hell it is only $.02 and it would be considered as a nuance increase. You or I would pay it if we needed the gas. I have no Idea what the price is down the road.

This is price fixing at its best especially if all the gas stations had the same price. There is no longer any loyalty to one gas maker as it once was. It is now, who has the cheaper gas.

Steve,     OK, I'll jump back in. Those were good questions in your post and will give it a shot on answers. If you (a competitor) called me and said "Let's go up 2 cents" I would tell you we can talk about the weather or girls or anything else but we are not talking about gas prices. That's that! End of story! I have not and never will talk to a competitor about prices. It is against the law and really just not good business. If you are interested, I can explain the good business part sometime. You will understand.

What pushes up gas prices is the price of oil. Every time you listen to the news and hear oil went up $3 a barrell, you can bet your booties me and every other gas station owner gets a 7.5 cent a gallon increase that day.

What pushes up the price of oil? As long as somebody in the world is willing to pay $115 for a barrell of oil, that's the price! Just exactly like wheat, silver, gold, coal, copper, tin, titanium, zinc, soybeans, porkbellies, orange juice, or any other world commodity. It's that simple!

You mentioned the oil company is only a agent for collection in reference to my mention of taxes paid by Exxon. Exxon is a collection agent for excise taxes. The $30 billion I said Exxon paid in 2007 were income taxes. Big difference! Fed excise taxes are 18 cts gas and 24 cts diesel. That is just a wash, whatever excise tax Exxon collects it has to wire transfer the 24th of each month to the IRS. Trust me, the IRS is waiting on Exxon's wire.

Income Tax subsidies and loopholes are harder to explain. Until 1975 oil companies had the "oil depleciation allowance". That really was a complete and total ripoff to the taxpayer. Started in 1924 and really got jacked up under LBJ. That whole era was replete with corruption and the oil companies were hip deep in it and the main culprits were from right here in Texas. It is still technically on the books but only for very small oil companies and then only when oil is under $20 a barrell. Just not a factor anymore.

There is another loophole called "Enhanced recovery credit". I don't know all the particulars on this but the govt gives some help for stripper wells (under 5 bbl a day). Major oil companies don't mess with these so again only for small operators. Personally, I think it needs to be done away with and probably will be. At todays prices about 80% of all stripper wells are profitable and the rest need to be shut down anyway. There is some provision for help under this tax provision on high sulpher refining. I don't know the dollar amount of this but Valero is the only refiner in America that can refine high sulpher oil and that is only at one refinery. There is just no sense in this Federal Income Tax provision, it needs to go. I just don't think this is a big money item.

"Intangible drilling cost" is called a loophole but is really a timing matter. Oil companies get to deduct 70% of drilling cost the first year and the remainder over five years. Over a five year period the effect on their taxes is zero, just like any 5 year equipment depreciation. I think this needs to be eliminated too. Drilling cost should be depreciated over 7 years just like you do your tractor, your farm truck, or any other capital equipment business item you own. There is no reason for oil companies to get any different depreciation method than anybody else. It does not save them any money over the long haul and just gets bad PR for them. It would be smart for them to lobby to get rid of it.

One last thing. This is a contract matter, not a legal loophole but some might call it a loophole. During the Clinton administration nobody was drilling in some offshore areas. Oil companies needed $50 bbl oil to cost justify. No oil company was willing to take the billion dollar risk in these areas. The govt waived 17% royalties to induce drilling. At the time nobody knew we were going to have $115 oil. The problem is, those companies that took them up on it made a binding contract with the govt to waive royalties on those wells. Just like with us, a contract is your word.

That's it for federal tax loopholes for oil companies. If you can find another one, let me know, we can make a tub of money as consultants.

Hope all this made sense.

As I had stated on Tuesday, Wednesday is usually(you can set your watch by it) the day they lower the gas prices by as much as $.05-.10 per gallon.

Well not even one of the 4 station that I have mentioned earlier dropped the price. What will happen now is they will wait for the corprate phone call and all 4 stations will raise them for tomorrow morning.

Gas still at $3.65.9 at all the 4 stations.

It appears to me that nobody is getting the underlying big picture here:

"Immigration control"

Make it so expensive in this country to live, that nodody wants to come here anymore.  ^-^

What's the gas prices lately?

Actually, I don't even look at the price.

My cousin owns a BP station. I hang out there upon occasion during morning rush hour. People come and go, complaining about the gas price, one remark after another........all the while with a bottle of $1.89 water in their hand, a $1.50 candy bar, a $3 energy drink, and maybe a $3 power shot........and a, "give me 10 numbers on the Mega Millions, 5 of those #7's and 5 of them #14's" (scratch-offs).

Get my point?  Priorities are totally screwed up in this country. When I was growing up, a bottle of soda (glass) was a treat about once a month, now it's as if it's a birth right.

Not that I don't feel the pinch, but just how bad is it............really?........yet?   ^-^

Have you noticed that the diesel has basically been stable and that the gas prices are the main issues.

It won't be long and the gas will be outpricing the diesel.

You have to take into factor the huge taxes that these countries add to the gas.

When I was in the U.S.N. over seas, back in the beginning of the 70's gas in the states were $.50 and over seas in Italy, Greece, Spain were pushing $2.00US.

Those countries get taxed to death either way you look at it. I would like to know how they pay for there fuel. They have to have one hell of a disposal income, or they can write it off when they fill their taxes.

Either way, we still all get screwed. Big business runs the governments no matter what country you live in.

that is the same  c109 they have been doing for over 30 years. They want you to conserve on Elect, Water, Gas(natural), oil. They give out rebates for all the new products. All the products are used, and now what happens? Consumer usage has dropped and now the board of directors is having a panic attack that they are not seeing any new revenue. So what do they do? They jack the price up to make up for the losses due to conservation practices.

It is nothing more then  c109, selling new product for a win fall, when thats run it course, start jacking the prices up again until the circle is complete.

It's always been that way as Pheasant Hollow mentioned. Your rides are getting considerable better mileage than ours also. EPA (Enviromental Protection Agency) makes sure that we don't get great mileage (diesel ban).  Alot of American cars are sold overseas with a diesel engine, 50-100mpg, and are not permitted to be sold here?   :-|

I was looking at a brand new truck the other day, it weighed 84,000lbs.  I could put my face in the exhaust pipe and there was absolutely no sign of diesel fuel, it was just warm air, kinda like a torpedo heater.  They claimed the air coming out of the pipe was cleaner than it was before going into the intake?  I was impressed, no smoke......no smell.

What's weird is.....that 2 local fuel stations in which I'm friends with the operators claim that they are selling more gas now than they've sold for years. One is going through 14,000 gallons of fuel per day(according to the operator) and there are lines to the pumps.   What's up with that?    ???

$3.95 here for gasoline, don't know the price of diesel, the last I looked, it was $4.39.  I've got to fill truck up in the morning with diesel......about $120   s47   Offroad diesel is $4.11

When did the 10th of a cent first come in to play? I remember back in the 60's when gas stations such as Moble, Flying "A", Sinclair would post their prices as $0.25.8 or 6  and even lower.

Was this action to show that the price was actually lower then the next highest price? Why even bother in todays pricing, why not just round it up to the nearest $$$ and leave out the . tenth of a cent.

I just wish they would stop raising the prices by even numbers   p33   was under a dollar then about 2 dollars now about 4 dollars. and it's not even prime price raising season here yet here in Maine when school lets out and vacation season comes around the price skyrockets especially near the coast  I think I will start riding the horse   c109  does anyone else see the vacation time price jump?

When did the 10th of a cent first come in to play?

A long time ago. I've got fuel price signs out of an old service station when it was around .10 a gallon......they actually read .109, etc. etc..

Of course back then people bought fuel buy the gallon......."Give me 6 gallons and check the oil".

Not the "I want to prepay $6 on...ummmm...uu.....pump 7, I think, that green car over there, and give me 10 numbers on the Mega Millions with these 2 bottles of soda (1.99each)"  scenario that you see today.

Was this action to show that the price was actually lower then the next highest price? Why even bother in todays pricing, why not just round it up to the nearest $$$ and leave out the . tenth of a cent.

I worked for Sohio many years ago and knew what their reasoning (excuse) behind it was, unfortunately, for some reason my mind only remembers...remembering,  not the actual memory itself.  Does that make sense?  s47
Regardless of any reasoning, I would still argue that it is actually a phsychological trick played on human beans minds.  Can you imagine the millions that 9/10 of a penny generates?   :-o    :-o    :-o    :-o    :-o    :-o

That's a good idea, then you can stop along the roadside along the way and let it eat off of everyones yard, then you won't have to buy feed either!   ^-^  'Cause it probably costs as much to keep a horse as it does a car, or is getting there?

Definitely.  I guess people will have to start vacationing closer to home, like they did 20-25 years ago?  That's not all bad....maybe the local economies will get a boost? State Parks and campgrounds have been hurting for years around here.

I just put $110 of diesel (small tank) in the truck today.     It takes about 3 tanks to get where I'm going and back in a couple of weeks. Last year it was about $75 a tank full........a $35 dollar difference x 3 = $105.  I can live with that, the problem is everything else known to man has gone up too, because of the fuel prices and opportunist price gouging combined.

Just wait until they sock it too us with the electric prices!

I read where only satan himself could straighten any of it out?......for a little while!

I would have to venture to guess that the reason for so much more fuel being used now is partially due to the fact that everyone and their brother has a giant SUV or truck where in years past people have driven VW's and yugos!! The attraction to the big gas guzzlers is slowly but surely going by the wayside!

I was wrong on the price signs. Here's a couple pictures of it. It's the same sign, they just flipped it over for 1/2 cent increases in price.  Take note as to how the price is rounded off to the next highest number in the right hand column.

Sorry, but I don't agree with that.  My 3/4 ton crew cab GMC gets better mileage per gallon than my little 4 cyclinder extended cab (12 inches) Toyleta truck. And I can actually do some work with the GMC. I've owned 3 Subaru Outbacks and my wifes current GMC Envoy gets as good of mileage than they did and is a much nicer dependable vehicle all the way around, and again, I can actually work the GMC.

Maybe... I dunno, was just a thought. I konw I get tired of putting gas in vehicles. Period. And I only have a Chevy Colorado and a Saturn Ion car. They don't suck gas by any means. I would love to have a bigger truck that I could actually haul somehting in, cause the Colorado is kinda worthless for that, but I don't wanna pay for the gas!!!

We do have a little trailer. Usually hauls the 4-wheeler. Hubby is actually re-doing it right now... It had the mesh floor and was getting weathered from being outside, so he took the floor out and put down decking boards and wire-wheeled the whole frame and repainted it... New lights in the process now. It looks good. Honestly, we haul more stuff in the car than the truck! Lay the back seats down and haul boards from the front window to the back of the trunk!! Quite redneck especially whe they are too long and stick out the back...

I wish they'd get it up to $5 even..........it would be easier to figure in your head how much $$ a fella would need to fill a can. With these odd numbers, I have to get out a pencil and paper!   s47

Overall, it only cost me $100 more in fuel than it did last year for the same trip to NC (about 700 miles round trip).

Everybody better hold onto their britches when the Electric companies jump on the wagon too.   :-o

Oil wells around here that have been setting idle for years are getting a working over and they're firing them back up.  I have my doubts as to whether it will make any difference if they're pumping oil or not?

Think it's bad here?.........some countries have companies (US based) that own the mineral rights to water.........even the rain water is illegal to catch!!

Why even pick it up? It is bio-degradable or use your hoe and pill it up and sell it as  c109 to the other neighbors that need the fertilizer.

Then again, if you can get enough of it you can bury it and start a methane gas farm s020

So I don't even bother or pay any attention.  People will drive 10 miles to save .08 on the gallon and then walk out of the store with a plastic bottle of water and a $3 energy drink.....that's what I don't get?????......then complain about the price of fuel.

The way the fuel prices keep going up, the people who do shop in the convenience store after gassing up will start spending less in there as well.

They will have to make the decision either one more gallon of gas, or the bottled  p i s53  s s water, the 1 once energy drink, or the smokes.

Sort-a-funny....on another forum there is a topic about a pipe line oil leak, that goes under a major river.

This is what one person replied:

100-150 barrels!!! that's gonna drive the price up at the pump for sure! first it was 911 then katrina then i heard that all the people in china filled their zippos at the same time (that was a bad one...) now this!! we're doomed!

Just wait until you get a load of the price of a bottle of ketchup.

3,678,295,721.67 people eating all kinds of food every day, 60 of them get sick over a 4 month period and they narrow it down to tomatoes?    :-|   ???   We'll pay for that one.

No way it could have anything to do with the 47 cats running around in the house or the fact that they lived like rats.

Plus, the orange growers are supposedly tearing out their crops and planting the all mighty "jatropha" plant for bio-fuels!   That's just great.

Before long, gas will be/seem cheap again at $6/gal when a jug of orange juice is $12.86 and a bottle of ketchup is $9.95.

Paid $4.699 for diesel at Walmart this afternoon.....just south of Baton Rouge............

They already have a car that actually runs on air.  It is being produced and is for sale....is imported from Europe.  I saw it on the internet last week.  Don't remember the name but they currently have 4 models, including a pick-up.

Check out the Tesla on the internet.  It runs on about 6 or 700 laptop type batteries and outruns the Porche.  It's built in California at a cost of about $100k.

It seems that OPEC is the one that loves to cause the speculation in the oil markets.

Quote
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Oil reached $140 a barrel for the first time ever Thursday following reports that Libya may cut production and an OPEC official said crude could hit $170 a barrel this summer.

Quote
According to a report by the Bloomberg news service, Shokri Ghanem, chairman of Libya's National Oil Corporation, said reductions may be made because the market is oversupplied.

Other reasons given by Ghanem: A response to sanctions against Iran, also a member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, and a bill being discussed in Congress that could allow lawsuits against OPEC countries.

Quote
Speaking to France 24 television Thursday, OPEC president Chakib Khelil said oil prices could rise to between $150 and $170 a barrel during the summer. He added that he didn't think oil would hit $200 a barrel.

And in todays yahoo news

Quote
CURB SPECULATION

A 40 percent surge in oil prices this year has prompted U.S. politicians to take steps to try to curb speculation in the oil market, that some blame for pushing up prices.

The U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday approved legislation which directs the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), the futures market regulator, to use all its authority including emergency powers to "curb immediately" the role of excessive speculation in energy futures markets.

Maybe I'm wrong but I don't see a great future for this. It would be wonderful if it could be really done with shavings, compost but I think that it will do like ethanol, they will use a plant that produce a lot of sugar (corn) to make more money with less trouble. So the cost of food after this will rise again because all the morons who are rising their prices due to ''gas price'' will have a new argument to make more money, they think we are stupid, it's funny to see that they try to make us think that the only expenditure they have is fuel.

I think that the best thing in a near futur are electric cars. It's possible to get a car quite powerful, nobody really need to have a car than is doing 0-60 in 4-5 seconds, nobody really need to have a car that can reach 100 mph... Few people are building electric car themselves that are quite good, so the rich companies are able to create something better...

Why taking food, I think it's more important to feed humans than to feed our gas thanks. Here in Canada, our ''dear'' governement is trying to obligate people to use ethanol/fuel mix. Ethanol, created like it is now, is really not clean for environment because corn is the worst kind of plant you can industrially use, lots of pesticides, lots of fuel burned, use the earth really faster than most other plants. So, to me, ethanol is a big enemy to Earth saving for the moment.

So finally, I prefer to say ''Why not food for human and electricity (or another clean energy) for car''. Because it's wonderful to think that we can create fuel really fast, but we need to save Earth. I know that some people here are quite old (please don't take it bad) and that some won't probably see the real problems that global warming will bring, but remember that there are young people, like myself (and my kids when I'll be older) that will still be alive. The best legacy you can let to your children, grand-children, etc. is a clean environment...

Thanks

Taking that much sugar out of the system would do the same thing that the corn is doing..there is sugar in just about everything..and sugar cane can only be grown in very limited places in this country and corn can be grown just about anywhere..I really believe that it is as they have been saying on TV it is the speculators that are driving everything up so high..

I've been known to run on nothing but alcohol and air a time or two.  Best thing is that the only 2 by-products is methane gas, which can be used as a repellent or maybe run a furnace on it?   And a cure for jelly fish stings.

Title: Re: Gas prices
Post by: frank_lap_127 on June 27, 2008, 01:01:02 PM
A battery powered truck is possible, I've saw a video on YouTube of a guy a bit older than me, at the university, who have done this with an old Datson (or something like) and was telling that with his money (don't forget he's at university!) he was able to run a truck and that the electricity bill of his dad was only $18 higher than normal, it's nothing compare to the $80-100/week (even more) for most of the people who have to use a car...

Methane is also really interessant because, when it's burned, it create carbon dioxide wich is 21 time les polluant than methane.

Thanks

Gas prices still holding around the $3.99 to $4.09 a gallon in the 10 mile radius where I am located.

A couple of stations that have the 10% ethanol are priced $.05 cheaper per gallon.

Has anyone seen any difference beside less MPG when using the gas blended with the 10% ethanol, engine running wise?

Any pros and cons on using this blended gas in mowers and chainsaws?

Us dollar and Canadian is close to the same now.
We get no breaks up here. In fact, you can buy Alberta fuels for less than I can !

Not sure of how Canada stands now, but we were the second most expensive place on this planet to live (I think it's the most expensive now ?) and Alberta is the most expensive in Canada to live. Used to be the least......till Ralph Cline took power (he is out now) and mucked up everything.

When the time comes, I'll be selling this place and moving back to B.C.

Well here it is 7-23-08 and the gas prices in a 10-mile radius from my farm vary from $3.89.9 to $3.99.9

Some relief, not much when you fill up 40gallons though.

Does anyone use those Fuel Link cards? Those are the ones that you obtain from certain supper market stores, like Foodland, Shoprite.

The stores have certain items that have any where from, $0.01- $0.25 off per gallon of gas at participating gas stations. The cent off is good for up to 15-gallons. My wife has accumulated up to $0.97 so far and they are good for 30 days. If you don't use them, you lose them.

Fuelinks MetroSplash Systems Group, Inc.

The stores might be worth the visit, could save you some money on the gas purchase.

Interesting read. Even while the price of oil is dropping, the price at the pump still remains high.

If the price of oil per barrel does go below 100 US$ you can bet the farm that the US Feds will incorporate the increase on the fuel tax to fund road restoration they were trying before the global price increase.

This will also give the states the initiative to increase the fuel tax for there own state road funding, which inturn will bring the price of US gas per gallon back up to the $3.00 pus per gallon, since the market has accepted it.

It was $3.55.9 - $3.59.9 yesterday in the 10-mile radius from my farm in Slate WV. I think the drop was just for the Wacky Wednesday, when they usually have the gas discounted, then they raise the price back up within the 24-hr period.

If they don't raise it, it will normally stay at that price until the next adjustment.

Dude - How much gas you burning just driving around that 10 mile radius from your farm every other day looking for a few cents difference in savings? j41

That would suck if you drove 10 miles north and then backtracked the 10 miles and went another 10 south and found out that the first place was 25 cents a gallon cheaper.  You'd have to go back north 20 miles to fill up and then backtrack south one more time 10 miles to get home.

Whew - that was 60 miles and an hour in the truck to save 3 bucks. s49

It's called a land line, and my wife passes by the 4 main stations on her way to work.

You can also find the prices of gas in your local area at:  http://autos.msn.com/everyday/GasStations.aspx?m=1&l=1&zip=26150 (http://autos.msn.com/everyday/GasStations.aspx?m=1&l=1&zip=26150) just type in you local zipcode.

CharlieHorse,

When I load up the truck my mpg drops down to about  12mpg HWY.

When I was into boating 1974 - 1994  we discussed about gas consumption in gallons per hr. The best I ever got on my 27' Silverton Sport Fisherman was 10 gal per hr. on a Chry 225hp/318CI with a single screw. I had twin 60gal tanks, and at that time in 1985, the gas was between $.89.9 - $1.10.9 a gal. The marina was selling it for $1.35.9

Those were in the better days.

Gas around my area is going for $3.59.9- $3.69.9 today. Who knows about tomorrow.

I get 20mpg in my GMC empty and about 10mpg pulling 5 tons down RT 77, the West Virginia turnpike will knock the mpg out of just about anything. If I could only control myself and keep it under 75mph, my mileage would probably increase some. But I'm willing to pay the extra $20 so I can race.   ^-^

Yeah, that boatin' is some expensive stuff.  It's figured in gallons to the mile if I'm not mistaken.  I have a cousin that practically lives on the Ohio River down by Hockingport (Belpre/Coolville area), he has a "Baja" boat and it about makes me sick when he tells me of how much it costs him every weekend to just run around. No fishing, seldom skiing or tubing......just runs up and down the river every weekend.   :-|

A few years ago I was in the back of a boat when my brother drove it into the riverbank at full throttle, we had to have been running about 50mph.   :-o  The steering cable locked up and we were to close to the bank and no time to do anything. I broke my seat off at the floor I was pushing backwards on it so hard, bracing myself for the impact.  That was one that I'll never forget and a long story.

Saudis out of OPEC.

Quote
The death of OPEC
Posted Sep 11 2008, 07:01 AM by Douglas McIntyre

Saudi Arabia walked out on OPEC yesterday, saying it would not honor the cartel's production cut. It was tired of rants from Hugo Chavez of Venezuela and the well-dressed oil minister from Iran.

As the world's largest crude exporter, the kingdom in the desert took its ball and went home.

As the Saudis left the building, the message was shockingly clear. “Saudi Arabia will meet the market’s demand,” a senior OPEC delegate told the New York Times. “We will see what the market requires and we will not leave a customer without oil."

  Sounds a little like Frank.

I hadn't heard this, but, I knew they were planning to encourage higher output.  They have a whole new oil field that will be coming on line late this year.  That had a lot of analysts thinking sweet crude prices would drop to $65-$85 this winter.  Saudi independence from OPEC (if it lasts) will likely make that happen even sooner.  I like the idea of $2 gas, but a sharp drop like that in oil isn't a lot more healthy than the steep rises to $120-$130.  It will help keep Russia at bay, as well as Communist supported regimes in South America.

This will put a big kink in Obama's tax cuts for the 50% of tax payers that aren't paying income taxes, now.

  RED ALERT !!!!

Now would a good time to get rid of those oil stocks, maybe even sell short.  And do anything you can to get away from oils stocks in retirement portfolios.

I heard that wholesale prices had jumped as much as $2 per gallon.  Those markets may be closed, today, giving no relief.  Mom and Pop, or independent stations probably have more trouble with volatility, and respond with more fear.

Any store that didn't raise prices would be out of gas in a few hours, losing the real profit sales (soft drinks, chips and beer).  That doesn't help much when you have an empty tank, but that's part of the situation.

What a joke, the price of oil drops down below $100.00 per barrel, and the U.S. dollar is on the rebound. Well today the U.S. Gov. decides to bail out another failed money institution. The stocks rally and then drops like a sock full of rocks. U.S. dollar going down because of the bailout and the price of oil per barrel jumps more then $25.00 per barrel. More then at anyone time ever quoted.

I say it is time to nuke all those  s53 uks and wipe out Wall Street and go back to the silver and gold standard and not the Federal Reserve Note that we have now...

I was in NYS then, they are in the forefront of socialist  suicide.

They have a law I'd never heard of that prohibits public statements targeting any ethnic group.  I asked the court clerk if that meant I could target anyone who wasnt a member of an ethnic group. He just looked at me.

I was going to tell him that that bumper sticker replaces one to make it a better day by shooting judges but the court clerk  said I'd want to get out in time to see the great grandchildren graduate.

So I went out and took it off and gave it to the bailiff that was standing there watching.

So was diesel, until VW and M. Benz started selling cars here.  Add $.80 to the price of Natural, and you get an idea of the real cost.  Plus when the demand goes up.......

Reg. gas is $2.61 in Wichita Ks.  Dropping 2-6 cents per day, often three changes in one day.  Don't hear a lot of people praising Bush and Cheney, the way they cussed them six months ago.  Just like the credit I get for the things I do.

Still 3.29 here today.

In 2005, and again in 2006 the Gop tried to enact  bills to put restrictions on Fannie Mae and Fredie Mac, the Dems led by Pelosi and Reid voted it down, including Obama.

McCain spoke out against the free money of Fannie Mae and Fredie Mac in 2006 and tried to enact a bill with five other Senators(Republican) but it was tabled in the Dem dominated committee.

Obama has NEVER voted against his party leaders, McCain has often worked with Dems to enact legislation.

Palin enacted legislation in AK returning large portions of the oil field revenue to the states population. She has more experience in executive management then Obama and Biden combined.

Emotions are running high, which is good, people feel strongly about these matters as they should, but lets not blind ourselves to what has and is happening. This big bailout is socialism leaping forward, and bails out the fat cats who caused this mess with us paying for their lifestyles. There are 545 people in Congress/Govt who have created this mess, only a handful who are honest enough to say what has and is happening and has any sound ideas to turn it around, which will take years now.

Nuff. Off my Soapbox.

It helps when the WORLD price of crude takes a big drop, nothing to do with politics!
Lets see, we pump the crude, refine it and sometimes it only has to travel a couple of miles to a Service Station. An example of how we get shafted, U.S. gallon = 3.87 Canadian Litres, so at $115.9 a litre x 3.87 we are paying $4.48 for a U.S. gallon of gas. $3.29 a gallon is only $.85, we haven't seen it that low in years. s49
 We are paying $121.9 a litre for diesel x 3.87 = $4.72 a gallon! s49
It wasn't just VW and M. Benz, that made diesel popular, there aren't too many 3/4ton trucks running around up here with out Ford/Dodge/Gm on them!  s176

As I remember it, the big swing with pickups, down here, came later.  There were a few, Chevy had a halfazz diesel in about 78-79.  But they weren't really popular until later, when more dependable engines were available.  I also seem to remember there was an increase in diesel highway tax.  I think, maybe at one time there was very little, or no tax on diesel, because trucking was so important to the economy.  If Natural gas becomes practical, and popular, there will eventually be a drop in tax revenue.  It will have to be taxed, or we'll have to go to hovercraft to get over the rough roads.

With the general public low on cash, Companies closing doors, the need for gas has almost come to a screeching halt.

The trucking industry still has to carry the ball, so the oil industry will keep diesel prices as high as possible, without making it look like price gouging.

Just my take on things.

Gas and diesel about the same today.
74.9 for gas, 79.9 for the fuel of course that is still way more then y'all are paying.
$74.9 x 3.87 = $2.89 U.S. gal or x 4.55 = $3.40 for the old imperial (cnd.) gal.
$79.9 x 3.87 = $3.09 "       "   "   " " "  = $3.63

Figured while there I'd put some in the tidy tank....if I don't have to go to town for fuel, it saves me fuel/money.

Just a reminder.
Oil shortage

A lot of folks can't understand how we came
To have an oil shortage here in Canada

Well, there's a very simple answer.

Nobody bothered to check the oil.

We just didn't know we were getting low.

The reason for that is purely geographical.

Our OIL
is located in Alberta, Newfoundland,
Saskatchewan and B.C.

Our DIPSTICKS
are located in Ottawa, ONTARIO

I bought gas in Ohio yesterday , at 1.849, got up to MI and it was 1.89, all over, got 45 miles from home and the town was having a gas war so I topped off at 1.85, got home and its 1.99, the last news item I heard was that oil continues to drop per barrel as demand drops.

Gouging continues, by the speculators on Wall Street.

Gas still $1.999 here in the Mineral Wells area. Glad I am retired and don't have to gas up like the working folk.  i6

Fox news says oil is now just under $ 38 per barrel and still falling, oil tankers are backing up and cant unload because there is no place to store the oil because demand isnt keeping up with the supply.

local gas here still is 1.99.

The gouge goes on.

Any excuse is sufficient for gouging.

Oil is now under $34/barrel, gas here is still 1.99, I'm not driving anywhere I dont have to.

Oil tankers are stacking up not able to offload as there isnt storage space for the new crude.

But still they gouge us, present prices supposedly is because oil speculators are buying up cheap oil and holding it.

It is the same price here Jake, $1.99.9 Nothing being done on dropping the price. I think the lowest here was $1.59.9 and the crude was around $50 a barrel.

To cold to go out anyway.

Keep warm!

Its still under $ 34/barrel, and pump prices here are 1.99, last week I was in Ohio and found some at 1.84, but most over 1.90.

This time its the speculators, and congress is obsessed with Obama and couldnt care less about what the little poor f### nothings are paying for gas.

We need about 50 of those speculators to be found in their car trunks. Where is Tony Soprano when you want him.

Color me PO'd.   s176

Well, during the campaign Obama said we 'needed' higher gas prices, so I'm not expecting any help from there.

Its 1.99 here still, and oil the lowest its been in five years.

The only working answer is speculators and gouging. And a congress that couldnt care less.

does anyone know why they say not to top off your tank?...

It's to help prevent condensation inside the fuel tank.

Can YOU tell me why it is even MORE important to do this with vehicles using diesel ?

Actually, toping of a gas fuel tank in the older days was the best thing you can do in the winter months if the vehicle was going to be kept in storage.

Having a tank full, kept the condensation out of the tank due to the fact that there wasn’t any air space to cause corrosion within the tank.

Before the additives such as oxygenated gas, I would fill the twin 30gal galvanized tanks on my boat and add the additive, STA-BIL fuel stabilizer. Winterize the 318 Chrysler by fogging it out with Marvel Mystery Oil over the winter.

Topping of a gas tank now-a-days serves no purpose what-so-ever, unless you see that the gas prices are going to go up.

Besides the fact, that any gas fuels that are sold today, to the general public has a shelf life, and starts to separate after 6 months if not used or not in constant motion, or agitated. It will also show more signs of gumming as well.

I will let ode answer the question about vehicles using diesel.

My old 86 GMC is still has a carb. All the old gas from weed wackers etc goes into the tank.
Filled both tanks this past fall. Will not likely ever get filled again.
Gotta love those older vehicles !
