Title: Pointy Eggs!
Post by: QuailLover22 on December 12, 2004, 11:28:22 PM
recently both of my quail have been laying pointier and pointier eggs! the small end of the egg is very pointy and one egg that was laid was nearly double the normal size. Also, one of my birds laid an egg with no shell that was quite large & pointy...They get gamebird crumble along with their fill of crickets every days and have free-choice calcium, grit, and millet seed. What's with the pointy eggs?

Hi, QuailLover22.  How old are your birds?  As they get older they can lay some pretty big eggs.  I had a 2 year-old bobwhite lay an egg the size of a pigeon egg (a little smaller that a bantam egg or about 250% bigger than a normal bob egg). (and she's still alive!) Also, some quail seem to lay more pointy eggs than other.  We've a semi-crippled duck who ocasionally lays a shell-less especially now that it getting colder.  Stress seems to affect the egg qualities.  Hope this helps.
