My youngsters are acting like they are itchy.  Whats up with them?

Possible they have "something"?
They are bobwhites, I have 25 of them and I have
never noticed itchy quail before. they are 2 weeks old.

Any suggestions??

they might have mites.  you might dust them lightly with insectcide. good luck

It very well could be that the juvenile plumage coming in is irritating them.  It would not hurt anything to dose them for mites, but you may want to consider a pan of sand with mite powder in it.  They will love it and will medicate themselves.

Thanks Shag, never thought of putting medication in sand.Sounds like it would be easier than dusting them. :D

Does anyone dust their birds with DE when they know they have a mite problem?

Sorry to ask, but what type of mite medicine?  I have never had to
deal with this.

Thanks!

If your looking for a natural, non-toxic method - DE (Diatomaceous Earth)  may be the way to go.  I'm not sure if giving it to them so they can dust bathe in it will give them respiratory problems though.  Might wait till someone else who has used it with quail responds saying it is ok.  I know a lot of poultry people use it in feed and dust baths for their birds.

we have a pool so DE is plentiful.

The babies are starting to feather, but don't
remember my last batch looking so flakey.

Possibly may have mites

oops...I forgot to tell you, DO NOT use the pool grade DE.  DE sold for swimming pool filters is ineffective for insect control because it has been heated and chemically treated. It won't kill insects and it is very dangerous to breathe.  You need to find FOOD GRADE DE.  Usually I can't find DE that has FOOD GRADE written on it, but you can read the content listing.  If it has anything listed besides DE then it is not food grade.  I can generally find it at any feed store.  Finding the best price is where I end up running around.  I think I paid $17 /50lb bag 6 months ago.  I don't use very much of it.

An old timer' gave me a small hint and it works great for my birds and they love it too.   Use wood stove ashes.  I put about an ice cream buckets worth of ashes into a kitty litter pan and put it in the Quail pen, they go nuts!!  It serves many purposes; it kills lice, it deters new parasites, its cool for the birds when its hot out and it provides relief from itching when they are feathering.
