I recently had eggs shipped from Texas. They were Butler Bobwhite eggs. Shipped on Monday, arrived Wednesday 9 am. Set for 12 hours until I set them in a pre-heated incubator. On day seven I, just for giggles, held a few eggs above a flashlight between my first finger and my thumb and saw( to my inexperienced eyes.) nothing.
I have no experience in this procedure. At seven days should I see something? or not?
They were purchased from a well established seller on Ebay.
Is the embryo too small to see at this point, am I too early?

TRY THIS...... Use a bright but soft light something like a LED....and do it in a dark room..You should be able to see plenty at 7 days....If in doubt break one open you have to learn sometime...

Probably wouldn't see much more than red "spiderweb" veins.  Day ten is usually my first serious try (if at all).

Also, I usually wait a minimum of 24 hours before putting shipped eggs in incubators, your eggs may be nearly a day behind.

You may just be getting a little anxious.

Slider, you're right I am anxious. Also, my eyes are not what they used to be and I was not wearing my readers.
Wilder, I do have an LED somewhere, I'll find it in the next day or so and give it a look. Thanks for the advice. If anyone knows, it's you two.
I'll let you know. Ghost. s98

Huh  ???

I too candle at 10 days. Even if letting the hens hatch their own.
When you candle, try to do in a completely dark room.
Like you Ghost, I just circle my index finger and thumb.
I use a mini mag light set tight.

You should be able to see blood veins spider web all over.

If you ever find one that liquid moves into the air space, very gently dispose of it. Means it is rotting and can explode.

I candle again at 15 days. The reason being is on day 12-13 is another period of time the embryo can die.

Also watch for a blood ring. It's very distinct when you see it. Goes all the way round the egg (not end to end). If you find one with this blood ring all the way around dispose of it. It's dead and will just rot in the incubator.

OK, that's weird....I didn't put that red beast in there and cannot get rid of it !

Ok Reeves " Huh ???" "Ya nut! Anyway, I got my Maglight out to look again, and at an upwards position the eggs look like a pale pink. Then I, for some reason, candled the egg from a side view. The bottom, (small end) looks clear up to about 1/3rd the way up, then the egg goes dark. Can I assume this is the embryo growing? Also, is the pink top actually veins? In your opinions am I going to have a good hatch? Everyone of my eggs look this way.

Sounds like they are all good.
Yes, look through the sides. Looking through the ends never worked, for me.

Honestly, this is my first attempt at candling. Reeves, that was the answer I was looking for.
Wilder, Slider, some things I know, this ain't one. Thanks, we have 13 days 'till the hatch.
I'll keep you up to date.

Candling and Spiders are not my friends. I'm not that computer savvy.

  Hey, you're a "genisus".

You can also click on additional options and check "don't use smileys".

But, then you can't put in a spider or frog.

I noticed this several months back, when some of you were having a big discussion about spiders in a brooder house.
