How is thier temperment? Meaning are they wild when you get near them or are they tame. Do you know what subspecies they are or no clue? Are you keeping them on wire?

IamTomm,
Never experienced them but I got somethign that is good with almost every species. First of all, read their habitat on the web on a birding site or something. Build them a plenty aviary and try to reproduce this habitat, it's sure they will feel safer. But of what I heard, they are quite hard to keep and need enough space if you don't want agressivity between the mates.

Frank,
I know the basics for keeping them, talk to a lot of people who keep grouse and see lots of grouse setups(in person and on the net ). I wanted to know how he is currently keeping the birds for sale so if I was to get some i could keep thier setup fairly the same. They basically need to be on wire most of the time(except if you plan on breeding them on the ground which so do then the substrate needs to be very sandy, but not many do it as I understand its to risky for the birds . So an aviary with lots of plants would be hard to replicate on wire

Ruffed Grouse are that tough? I haven't looked into them much but I thought that would be a nice niche in the market because I have never seen a game farm that offers them. When they get on the bottom of the population curve, offer them at the farm for the boys with pointing breeds that want to hunt. If I ever try, I think Tom may be the guy I talk to, though.
Tom, are there any other reasons you never see them at game farms?

If you want to add novelty, you could try Huns, and a few Black Mutants. The huns would be a good "transition" toward Ruffed Grouse raising. They're pretty labor intensive, the first 2-3 weeks, but not as tough as the grouse. They make a good variety addition, and you can make pretty good money on the eggs, if you have extra.

People need to do some research (not you Tom).
Males have to have their own pen. Females in one next to them. Let the hen into his pen for breeding, watch them and when the deed is done, get the hen back into he pen before the male kills her. He will not tolerate her in his area after (each) breeding.
In the wild, they will (normally) have several hens within his area. Hens will come into his area for breeding then leave.
Any person wanting to raise them needs time to spend with them.......

We kind of trashed up this add, with semi-humor.
