Are you talking about making them from waste corrugated cardboard? I have know idea, but I kind of doubt it.

Canada has new (ish) and evolving rules for shipping birds. After reading them over, then building shipping "boxes" then finding out they were no good, I ended up using a modified Cat carrier to ship last time (last year).
They just shipped it back via Greyhound.
I doubt I'll be shipping birds again.......too expensive. It is a 4 hour drive round trip to the air port. Shipping costs. Then "they" have to ship the Cat carrier back.  All adds up fast & I end up paying money to sell birds....because no one wants to pay all the costs.

If someone wants birds from me now, I let the birds hatch out, then the person can have all they hatch, and drive here (or at least part way) and pick them up.
Besides, I seldom sell, more often than not, I trade something.

In US, I've only seen birds shipped USPS. Not sure if any other service or if they are cheaper.

Regarding the box, I think you may need a USPS approved box. For example: http://poultry2.tripod.com/id3.html
May want to give USPS a call and ask. I mean, there's nothing special about these boxes except they charge you an arm and leg.

thanks! i will give ups, and USPS a call next week. i was thinking to just take one of USPS standard ship box's and cut small holes out, and cover them with wire? it would save money!

In order to ship birds you need a USPS approved shipper and Steve listed some good links below.  hm-e.net is a good source for these boxes and you may also find a few other retailers online.  Nearly all shippers I've ever seen are listed on this site that I know of are approved.  If the USPS is doing their job correctly then they will not accept your box if you make it as described.  All adult birds are required to be shipped with protective bio-hazard screens in place although I have seen some that were shipped without them and they were getting by with it.  The shipping carton for chicks is not too expensive.  You can get them for as little as $2.00 each when you buy in quantity.  Over the years the post office has made both good and bad changes to their shipping guidelines.  This year looks to be great and I plan to ship chicks and birds once again where as before I had to call ahead for a flight, etc.

Visit www.birdshippersofamerica.com and they have guidelines, destinations across the country, etc.  Its what I use to ship.

For those that also ship birds FedEx now carries lives shipments through the post office (not FedEx directly).  So hopefully many of us can ship once again without worrying if chicks will arrive in a timely manner.
