New Bill Threatens Aviculture & other Pets....

Currently in Committee - H.R. 669: To prevent the introduction and establishment of nonnative wildlife species that negatively impact the economy, environment, or other animal species' or human health, and for other purposes.

The bill has been posted on http://www.gbwf.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=228 as well as addditonal links that provide more information.  We need to see that is killed in Committee and does not make it further.

I'm as right wing as they come... but still feel that after reading this that it has good intentions.  My thoughts were that it is more toward the introduction of new and nonnative species that may threaten native ecosystems. (Released nonnative species)  I understand that my pheasants are nonnative, don't get me wrong there but would consider them established.  Maybe I'm wrong... I know that when new legistation goes in like this it seems that there is always a hidden agenda... maybe you all have seen far more of those hidden agendas than I have.

how bout that!  Guess that it might just be that from living in michigan, we have seen our fair share of invasive species that cause a lot of problems,  Round Goby, purple loostrife, rusty crayfish, lamprey, zebra muscle... i could go on.  Without some type of education/control there will be more and more introduction of these organisms that compete with native species.

yeah i agree there has to be some kind of control and monitoring  of our wildlife to some extent. its to easy for natives species to be overwhelmed by others in the competition for foods and habitat .but thats no excuse for slipping in government control that strips the right of HUMANS to the pt of threatening livelihoods and possibly our food supplies etc. most of our domestic species that serve to make our lives easier (horses ,dogs and alot of our cattle etc) are non native, but with responsible management  we can coexist with out it being a problem. being an extremist is not the way to cure problems in our country . that crap belongs in russia and china , not america

yes i did read it ,thanks reeves ,i know it has to do with importing nonnative  species ..but its reallly broad .species covers everything from butterflies to elephants.as stated by one fella on the link , it can also affect the sale of birds you raise ..game birds . im more in the pet bird business as you know, but it will affect all aspects of bird raising . i do agree care should be taken when releasing nonnative species .in the pet world even the java rice birds ,that i nraise, are a nonnative ,invasive species . thats why they are prohibited in some states ,they eat crops.so i know some control is needed but it affects my livelihood as well if i cant get new stock or sell my babies to bird fanciers.creating mules would be better than restricting all import of possibly invasive species.

  Couldn't say, for sure.

  I had a Father in whom I had complete confidence (at least until I was 16-18, or so).  I assumed he was correct, and got off "the other fellow's" suggested path.  Since, I have always used a map that I've found very useful.  It was by a man named Gideons, I believe.  I've wandered a bit, from time to time, but never because I fell for some one's well intentioned restrictions on the liberty of citizens.  Or because some fool came along and suggested "it's for the children" (or puppies).  No, in general, I have always known the nature, if not the exact destination of the trouble toward which I was headed.

  You could be right, though.  I'm sure there is plenty of bitterness and resentment in hell, especially one the part of those who followed some Socialists good intentions.

Jwindsor, my husband and I think you are way off base in your remarks directed to Wilder about bitterness and resentment. We think you should study Wilder's words carefully. There is a lot of wisdom in what he has said... We are still studying the bill, but we do see that is it co-sponsored by Barney Frank and some other knee-jerk, left-wing radicals, and that tells us a lot right there!
