Thought I'd chime in with my two cents.  Last night at 7 pm many places here near town were between $4.59 at the lowest and $4.99 was the highest.  Still saw a couple with gas at $3.89 but traffic was backed up.  Sure they went up again by now too.

Saudis out of OPEC.

Quote
The death of OPEC
Posted Sep 11 2008, 07:01 AM by Douglas McIntyre

Saudi Arabia walked out on OPEC yesterday, saying it would not honor the cartel's production cut. It was tired of rants from Hugo Chavez of Venezuela and the well-dressed oil minister from Iran.

As the world's largest crude exporter, the kingdom in the desert took its ball and went home.

As the Saudis left the building, the message was shockingly clear. “Saudi Arabia will meet the market’s demand,” a senior OPEC delegate told the New York Times. “We will see what the market requires and we will not leave a customer without oil."

  Sounds a little like Frank.

I hadn't heard this, but, I knew they were planning to encourage higher output.  They have a whole new oil field that will be coming on line late this year.  That had a lot of analysts thinking sweet crude prices would drop to $65-$85 this winter.  Saudi independence from OPEC (if it lasts) will likely make that happen even sooner.  I like the idea of $2 gas, but a sharp drop like that in oil isn't a lot more healthy than the steep rises to $120-$130.  It will help keep Russia at bay, as well as Communist supported regimes in South America.

This will put a big kink in Obama's tax cuts for the 50% of tax payers that aren't paying income taxes, now.

  RED ALERT !!!!

Now would a good time to get rid of those oil stocks, maybe even sell short.  And do anything you can to get away from oils stocks in retirement portfolios.

My opinion?  Buy on the West end.  Hope that helps.

Or try to wait a couple of days, oil workers are already moving back out to the rigs, an refineries are reopening

It is $4.05.9 all over the western side of WV. They are even selling the E10 at the same price.

I heard that wholesale prices had jumped as much as $2 per gallon.  Those markets may be closed, today, giving no relief.  Mom and Pop, or independent stations probably have more trouble with volatility, and respond with more fear.

Any store that didn't raise prices would be out of gas in a few hours, losing the real profit sales (soft drinks, chips and beer).  That doesn't help much when you have an empty tank, but that's part of the situation.
