I NEED HELP. I think my Pheasants are pecking their eggs. They just started laying and i am finding the eggs pecked, it could be squirrels but im not sure. Any imformation will help greatly. Thanks
I doubt if it is a squirrel issue. If the eggs are broken open, they are eating the yoke. Once they get the taste of the yoke, both hens and cocks will break them open and consume the yoke and also eat the shell.
Make sure you your feed is high in protein. Have ample space for the hens to lay, use straw as a bedding in wooden boxes at least 14" x 14" x 6" deep. Keep the nesting boxes in a darken area, this will help prevent the eating of eggs.
If the hens are cramped for space you will get multiple hens laying in the same nest, this will cause the hens to step on the eggs and make small holes or crack the egg.
You can also uses large SS dog water dishes as a nesting facilities as well. Just make sure you have one box or dish per hen and at least 4 inches of bedding.
