Title: Pheasant Hunt In South Dakota??????
Post by: Missourihunter85 on July 22, 2008, 02:34:21 PM
I have a question for those of you that are lucky enough to go to South Dakota and hunt pheasant. Me and a few of my friends are throwing around an idea to go to South Dakota on a pheasant hunt for a bachelor party, and just wondering if what kind of expenses should we expect besides gas food and permits. Is there anything else that I need to take into consideration? Or maybe even a few honey holes. We haven't decided for sure where, when, or even if that's what we're going to do but I would like to know what's in store for me when I do go.

If you take any of those along with you, you'll need a lot of money!

Maybe a little extra to pay traffic fines.  If you are going early i the season, teach your dogs to drink from a water bottle, before you leave.  Keep ice handy to put on their belly/crotch, to cool them off, fast!  Do not wet the dog down, until they run a little, it seems to make them overheat more quickly.

Take along a pistol, or revolver fr snakes, and to use on the groom-to-be, just before the rest of you head home.  That way, he won't suffer.

At least you have the right kind of dog!  I always advise against taking a Brittany on Pheasant until at least his second full season, and prefer the third.  Most don't listen, but, that's OK, I only charge double to retrain one.

I may have asked, before, but where, in Missouri, are you?

I've never heard of using ice on their belly, but that's a great idea. I just always had water in a bottle and a gallon container with ice water in it. If i take one of mine I'll probably take my female (the one in the picture), she has already been on pheasant here that we bought. But I'm not sure what we'll do. I am the only one that has any dogs that are ready to go.  A friend of mine has 2 brits as well but haven't done anything with. Both mine are trained already, but my male seems a bit skiddish so I'm going to work them in slowly, my female isn't afraid of anything and held the pheasants great. I am assuming that's why you advise against it?? I live about an hour north of St.L, almost directly between St. Louis and Hannibal.

Well, being flogged by a wounded Pheasant can cause problems.  That depends a lot on the dog.  The first wild bird my 5 y/o male retrieved was a young turkey.  I shot it quickly, flying through tree tops, and broke a wing.  Joe got whipped away from it three times (he was 7 Mo. old), before he got a good grip.

Other dogs may have just quite the game, and if I had time to think, I probably would have tried to stop him.

The biggest problem with wild Pheasant is that they move on the dog.  Often, a young dog will start creeping, or even charge the bird, when it moves.  That's bad enough on the Pheasant, but when you bring that dog back, and try to hunt Quail, or Grouse, the habit continues.  Naturally, when a dog moves forward on a Ruffed Grouse, or covey of quail, the hunter shoots the dog, and starts over!

The ice, or ice water on a bath towel, is only for a dog that is really overheated, or starting to show signs of heat stroke.  They often don't really recover from that, so keep them coming back in, so you can get a good look at them.

I am ljack, there, but don't get on much any more.  Most of the guys there are pretty good.  Take anythin Karen says with a grain of salt besides being a Yankee, she doesn't have nearly as much experience as she puts on. Dave is the owner of the board, and doesn't allow any crap.  He owns the sire to my 5 year old, and knows as much as anyone (except maybe Delmar) about training dogs.  Take a look at his training tips,

I use some different methods, but nothing that would contradict his basics.  If nothing else, you will enjoy looking around.
