Kick 'Em Up - Knock 'Em Down

« on: February 24, 2013, 01:40:35 PM »

How long have you guys stored feed?  I am going to start my chicks this year with a prepackaged Nutrena Feed and if I buy a ton, I can get a price break.  However, I think I would need about a ton for all three hatches of pheasant.  The first hatch will be end of April and the last hatch will be mid-August.  Will the feed lose any nutrition while sitting for 6 months?  I'm guessing not a whole lot but probably a little bit.  Just wondering what you guys have experienced.  Thanks!

I buy my feed by the ton but even in the slow months I go through it in just a couple weeks.  Storing feed shouldnt be too big of a problem and its definately cost saving if you can buy it in bulk.  Just make sure you keep it dry and rodent free during that time.

Be very carefull 6 mo. is a long time to store feed. I would say 2 mo. at the very most..You have moisture, Rats, Mice to deal with and moisture will be your worst enemy..

Thanks for the info Slider.  The feed I would need to hold that long would be a prepackaged 30% starter that would be stored in my finished garage, not sure if that would influence your thinking.  I have held feed for 8 months and it turned out pretty well for feeding a buddy's chickens  :?:  I didn't trust it to give it to my birds.
