so i want to make one single brooder for about 100 BW chicks... i want to have them on a wire floor

my question is, how big of a brooder do i need to build? i would like to keep them all in one brooder from day 1 to wk 5 or so when i put them in their outdoor pen.

am i right in thinking i need about a 30-40 sq ft brooder to be able to raise them to wk 5?

i will be raising them in my garage so i might have a bit of a temp variation from day to night but i shouldnt have to many problems with drafts, although should i still consider making it somewhat covered just incase there is a draft; if i was to open the garage door for a bit or something... could i make a completely enclosed structure and just have an old computer fan hooked up at the top to circulate fresh air?

how many brooder lamps would i need? 2?

any ideas, thoughts or pics would be greatly appreciated

thanks

GQF has a brooder for sale, recommended for 100 Quail and it is 3'x3'. Completely open floor space.

I have a beautiful little brooder, about 24 x 48", made from an old rabbit hutch. Wire floor, heat lamps with dimmer, I love it. Good for 50 quail or 25 pheasants easy. Eventually I have to move out the pheasants, but by then a floor with a brooder fence is more tolerable for them. I am going to post a slide show of the process on SLIDE. It came out awesome. the link is http://www.salpfarming.org/index.html

Dancemiker, This is all I do

JimMurray,
First of all thanks for all the pictures that are added with your posts. I have been struggling to get information on viable home grown business/facilities. Your pens and pictures are inspiring. Now on to my question. I have been working on flight pens and indoor breeding cages for alittle over a month. Ready to begin work on my brooders and am wanting to keep them open bottomed. As everything else of yours seems to be above the ground, I was wondering if you keep the floors of your brooders solid? Does this cause illness? Or are you moving them into something bigger sooner than 5 weeks? I hate to ask it but, how many do you put in this size brooder and for how long?
I have a ton of questions now that I have found this forum, but will try and limit them so everyone can keep up.
