Title: damn raccoons............
Post by: birdlover17 on June 11, 2008, 01:03:58 PM
Hey,
looks as though i have a coon problem, its destroying my garden and pond.  I wake up every morning finding pots of plants knocked over and such, if i dont take action quick i'm afraid i will lose all my fish and plants, if only i had a  c110 .
What have all you used to win the war against the predator? , as a last resort i'll try to save money for an electric fence, thats what i have my mind set on.

Any help is appreciated!!  j2

Win a battle maybe. Win the war against predators never.
Traps and guns work for me.  c110 The problem is by the time I
know there around some birds are missing.
Need the electric fence I think.
I have a gray fox and a fisher poking around now.
Birds are still ok for now.

Thanks for your replys!!

I would try a trap, have one but if i catch it where would i take it, maybe to a nearby lake?
I think i'll just get the electric fence, i dont want to be that nice by removing him, let him get shocked.......

You can take it to the oven...350* for 3 hrs. bast with butter every 30 min. with mashed potatoes and some of that gravy and some buttered biscuits.

I see that home depot has a spool of electric wire, but where does the electricty come from, in other words where is the plug to connect it to a outlet? Its just a roll of wire, I'm unsure on how this would work.
Title: Re: damn raccoons............
Post by: Bird Brained on June 11, 2008, 07:52:01 PM
The electric outlet has two narrow vertical slots.  One end of the wire goes into one slot, the other end goes into the other.  You won't be using the round hole beneath the two slots for this.  Lick your fingers really good first before handling the wire so they're moist. j1

Seriously...as slider mentioned already, you need the fence charger....and insulators (various types  are available, depending on how you will be installing).

If you do not know how to install an electric fence then you do not need to be fooling with it until you have read enough about it to be successful .

I would have, but was too late.  Yes, Steve there are raccoons in Harlem, and Manhattan, also.  Not as tasty as their corn fed country cousins.

The lake is a great idea leave him in the trap, connect a strong cable, or rope, toss it in.  Fish for 2-3 hours, then retrieve your trap.

If you catch it in a live trap just reach in and grab it by the scruff of the neck...it will come quietly and you can place it in your car or truck on the seat next to you  and drive to the lake and just let it out... s020  JUST KIDDING.....

A near by lake may work but I'd wonder if it would come back ???

It might, it might not - Is there a family it's trying to feed ? Is there
more than one ? In using a live trap, once caught, I hear a tarp over
the cage driving at least 40 miles out in the middle of as close to no
where one can find being certain the habitat can support it and theres
plenty of obstacles in a possible return has worked.

This might be taking things to far and the critters may become a problem
for someone else but it's what I've heard works -  You could try your local
animal shelter or contact DFG - They might do something about it or point
you in a direction. In some states, its illegal to relocate...

Thanks guys for all your replies, they are very helpful. j2

I wouldn't mind trapping but as some of you mentioned it may be illegal. Funny last night i didn't get a visit..if only it was like that everyday.  I've been trying to think about what other tips to try, I've researched on goggle but every link is pretty much the same stuff.  A good idea, since the raccoon(s) get to my pond from climbing a fence i could attach something sharp or slippery on the top of the edge (any ideas?) , or apply mesh on the top in a way where once the coon is at the top, over its head is  wire mesh and cant get over it. But then again the coon always finds a way to get over, i just hope to solve this problem soon, so i cant start enjoying my pond again, its looks bad right now.

Hey Coop, we are talking NYC here. Not some outskirts in the bayou. His nearest neighbor is less then 60Feet from the back and the next door neighbors can hand each other sugar and cream out their window.

#1, NYS DEC, will not allow trapping within the City Limits.

#2, NYC animal control, will not send out anyone either, if it is related to wild game, so back to #1.

#3 Transporting wild game out of the immediate area is illegal. NYS Licensed animal control (private enterprise) is the only option.

Again, I doubt very seriously that he has a coon problem.

Coop,

I also want to mention, if he calls the NYS DEC, they are going to cite him for harboring Wild Game Birds without a license. If he calls the city, they are going to cite him for farm animals within the city limits.

It is a no win situation for birdlover..

Really Steve, remember, i did see it with my own two eyes. I have automatic lights around my pond that turn on at night, i would always finding this large cat-like creature splashing the water, knocking down the plant pots etc...  Until i noticed their were black and white stripes didnt take long for me to recognize the culprit. It shouldn't be hard to beleive that coons are around the city, they enjoy eating out of peoples garbage and seem to adapt to city life.

Well, if it is a coon, I can't see why it would take up resident in your yard if you are telling me that they have a free meal within the neighborhood garbage.

Go pick up a havahart trap, put sardines in it and tie the can down.

Tie the trap down as well. If and when you do live trap it, take it in the garage, place the trap in a doubled up green leaf bag, place a hose on your parents exhaust pipe and place the other end in the bag and tap it shut.

Let the car run at idle for 15-20 minutes. Once the coon has expired, place it in your freeze until trash day and then dispose of it with you normal trash.

Oh, and make sure your parents car is outside the garage when you do this.

Remember, no picture for posterity, and no show and tell pictures either, and no posts on the internet.

My experience with New York has been limited to driving through it in the country. I'll admit that before that I thought of New York as nothing more than a big city... duh

You would know better than I -

However - theres lots a ways to deal with raccoon if indeed thats what the problem is. A trap would tell all

NO sense getting in trouble

Birdlover, I use a K-9 Electric fence cotroller by ZAREBA www.zarebasystems.com. to keep deer out of my garden, I saw a doe come off her feet after getting hit. I have not had it plugged in now for three years and they still stay away. It is about $30 bucks for the brain box and 1000 feet of wire.  Can I get a " You're the MAN!"

I'm sticking with the trap method, at least it will save me money from buying the electric fence. I baited it tonight with bagels, I'll try something else if that doesn't work. Hopefully I'll catch him soon and hopefully its just one, or trouble is coming.

Funny thing i stepped out to see how my quails were doing, and i noticed that 3 quails had escaped, the door was open, i know for sure that i didn't leave the door open.  I'm thinking that the raccoon did that, their paws are like human hands so i guess its pretty easy for them to just open a door.  Don't understand how a door could just be open just like that, if it was the coon i just hope hes trapped real soon.  Now i have quails roaming around, thats if the coon didn't get to them while in the pen. I seemed to noticed quail feathers in the corner of my garden, so i immediately went to look for clues as for paw prints around or in the quail pen.  I'm just very upset about all this and want this  s53 coon to pay

First of all if you have never trapped racoon in a live trap, it is a very tricky thing. Racoons will never step on the trigger  they step over things in the wild not on them. You have to set a very "HAIR" trigger on the trap so when it gets inside and eats the bait then when it truns around and moves the trap a little the trigger will throw....

Yeah for the trap i'll set it very light, in a sense that the slightlest movement while in the trap will bring down the lever. Sounds like this time i'll finally catch it.
Title: Re: damn raccoons............
Post by: CharlieHorse on June 19, 2008, 01:33:12 PM
Raccoons are large and powerful animals. When caught, they lunge and leap about often breaking a weak trap or tripping the locking mechanism and releasing the trap door.

When handling a live 'coon in the trap, be careful as they are quick and strong. Stun the animal with a rap on the nose with a stout stick, then kill it by drowning or by stepping on its chest and stopping the heart. Then declare "self-defense" when the authorities show up.   ^-^

Some can be brought into the house as pets, much like a lemur.  They are odorless and are easily potty trained.

LOL!!! The lemur does have a striped tail like the bandit you speak of....
I too have had my fair share of trying to catch those darn coons and no luck. Either the trap is too light and it goes off before the coon even comes or it doesn't go off at all. I hate those things. Both the coons and the traps. s80

Okay, here's the deal  s020

If you have a Hav-a-hart box trap or similar, you will have to:

1) put 1/4" hardware cloth wire around the back 1/2 section of the trap(Top, bottom, back and sides) The coons will reach in for the food in this area. That is the reason for the wire.

2) make sure that what ever you are placing in the box trap is against the back wall and wired down. If you are using sardines, wire the can to the bottom of the trap. If you are using either chicken or Ribs, NYS coons like this I have found, and being from LI, NY and having my fare share) wire the pieces to the back wall of the trap.

3) stake down the box trap so it will not move, as CharlieHorse had mentioned, the coon, if trapped will get out by either rolling the trap or bouncing inside the trap jarring the door open.

Damn Racoons are pi$$ing me off the last few days also.
Just after getting over a major storm a few weeks ago with power out for 4 days, spending $50.00 a day for gas to run the generator, then after coming home & finding the circut blown for the incubator and hatcher. It was too late, a hatch started & one bird made it out. Everything was so cold I scrapped 870 eggs total.

Now in the last week, Racoons. They are grabbing birds feet & birds are legless if not dead. I had to put pieces of cardboard on parts of the bottom of pens so legs can't be grabed. I set the live trap, first night nothing. Second nite my wifes cat.
See what happens tonite with the trap. Might even set up a baby monitor out there and if I hear a ruckus sneak out c110
Might be a while till I can get a e-fencer going.
Just when I thought I might be able to break even this year.
I really don't want to have to break out the fly bait & coke

Sorry to hear about that drwink.  We've had plenty of power outages here this year too, luckily I haven't had anything incubating or brooding when it happens.  Fortunately, I've only got 10 BW's in the pen in which their friends had been killed by the varmints in the past, so they've had past experiences with coons, so they seem to set tight away from the sides and stay low now.

Good Luck to ya.

The only thing that I have found that works for coons, and black bears is hot wires, that they pay attention to. Great horned owls also.

Good luck.

sorry about the pictures i deleted it by accident, i attached them to the post but i guess they didnt come out great.  For the raccoon i took a small fish and added plenty of pepper to it, cayenne and chili powder, i guess the coon took a bite of that and never wanted to come back again.... s020

Hey,
Couldn't believe my eyes last night, I was in my house just playing around, then here comes my  sister telling me that she saw raccoons outside.  In a split second i ran out to see for myself, i went out and didn't see or hear anything, until i see these raccoons one by one climb down my neighbor's tree, they sounded just like squirrels how they ran down that tree. I immediately took a rock, a ball of dirt anything to throw at them, then i ran to get the hose to scare them off, i wanted to give those coons what they deserved. Let me just tell you i saw so many coons that i lost count their must of been 7 coons if not more their, when i saw the coons come down the tree their were some pretty small so I'm guessing their were some babies, and also all the coons were in a group together.  After they scurried down that tree they were going around my neighbors deck searching around plant pots, my neighbor has his lights by the door opened and their was one coon who just ran up to the door, thought that he was going to enter  s020  i thought coon were scared of lights guess not.

Well, I've seen it all, wish i had pictures to show you guys.  What a night.... c110....................... a27 a27 a27 a27 a27 a27 a27

Get the trap set and leave it.......Also you can try marshmallows/peanut butter to get the coon. I trap and know that coons have a thing for sweets. Also if it is a family it would be wise to have more than one trap. And when you do relocate them make sure it is FAR away. And I'm kinda wondering why some folk are doubting that there could be coons in NYC. Coons can pretty muchly live anywhere there is food and water...which could even be an apartment building.
Good Luck with the Coon Capper!
You need a good ole .22!!

Thanks for the advice PAcoturnix, but is it worth it to bait a trap if their are more then 20 coons roaming around?, your bound to not get all of them. I think an electric fence would be better, but my pond is ok now i covered it entirely with wire mesh, it doesnt look all that great with the mesh buts its this or i have to wake up every morning finding my fish gone missing.  Yeah coons are pratical city animal i dont either understand why its hard to believe that a city area wouldn't have coons.

Yep i do need a good ole .22 but i'm not old enough to own one, or am I ?.. :-|..... s020

Don't give up so easy.   I'd get those coons one way or another. Make yourself a new hat or some underwear with their hides.  You could be the neighborhood taxidermist, along with all those other names the neighbors have gave you.
