I have raised show quality rabbits for over  a decade, and plan to keep Coturnix quail in some of my rabbit cages that I'm not using for rabbits.  Does anybody keep pedigree's for their quail to keep from inbreeding too much?  I think I will probably band mine and keep track somehow........  maybe in my rabbitry pedigree program I can add a section for the quail, LOL.

Slider, sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. There is a reason why the County fair does not have a blue ribbon for Quail.

Bk, I'm concerned that you have way too much time on your hands. Bring in new blood whenever your breeders are past their prime. In the wild a Pheasant is old at three years of age, Quail may be good for that long, I am not sure.

One thing I know for sure is smaller birds have a shorter lifespan than their larger cousins,
that said, a rooster in any species is governed by nature as to how long they are fertile. Your best bet is to do a lot of reading, and you are in the right place. I would suggest " Propagation" as your jumping off point. Ghost.

I have been reading for hours and days.....

In rabbits, if they are inbred, the size goes down.  Some people use it on purpose for that reason - I would not want that to happen on an already small bird - that's one of the reason's I asked.  Yes, I have time on my hands because my home business is really slow right now because of the economy.  when I set my mind to something, I pour myself into it learning all I can.  I do not do anything half-heartedly.  I read and read and ask questions that I don't find answers for.

I guess nobody keeps lineage info then huh?

I do, on my Pheasants and Quail. Just a note book on each species.
But I do not have a lot of birds.

thanks you reeves - I do not plan to keep more than 10-12 trio's, so it should not be too hard to keep track.

thanks Suz658!

What type of color mutations are there?  Although I'm most interested in just the wild color, I do love the challenge of producing 'other' colors in my rabbits, so would be interesting if there were color genetics in birds like there is in rabbits, or something similar....
