Hi all, my name's Larissa and I've just joined  I have recently acquired a new quail and I am a little confused as to what type it is and what gender. I'm familiar with Japanese quail but this one has me stumped!
Any help gratefully recieved, Thanks!

s176 Well thanks for the reply! I was kinda hoping it would be a female as I already have two males and 1 female, does it make a difference that it's chest is speckled? I thought females have speckles on their chest but I guess because it's not a Japanese I could have been mistaken? It's a fairly large bird too about the same size if not slightly bigger than my female coturnix.

Yes, if the chest is speckled with black dots or stripes its a female, males have a solid coloring without any stripes or dots. The vent sexing is a accurate way to tell, try that method. Good Luck

With any of the Coturnix/Pharaoh, sexing by appearance is a crap shoot.  Since we're on the subject (and apparently, this is now a birdie porn site!) squeezing the vent can prove it's a male.  If you get white foam, it is male.  If you don't, you can't be positive, but repeating the process, another day, increases your odds.

Many thanks for all the responses, I tried vent sexing the other day and could feel no obvious bulbous bit although the bird is very nervous and dislikes being held so I didn't poke around for long! I guess I'll just wait and see... hopefully it's a girl!
Thank you all once again   :?:

That's better!  We do observe certain proprieties here.

Well, maybe we should begin to.

You will only see the foam if it is sexually mature and has not been kept in a dark place like the mass producers keep the males to get them from becoming sexual active..

Thank you so much for those pictures.  It really makes a difference to see what everyone is writing about to sex them.  I wish there were more pics (of everything, not just bird gentalia), it just makes visualizing what you don't know that much easier.

I do hope that didn't sound too absurd?  It could certainly be misconstrued in the wrong company.

But bird genitalia is your favorite, right?

it just makes visualizing what you don't know that much easier.

Yes, even the ladies section of the Sears catalog helped when I was a kid!

One more thing that's ruining American kids, no Sears catalogs.

You really are the detail man, today.

Does the swelling subside, also?  Do you know about how long it takes them to recover, once they are back in well lighted conditions?

By the way, Larissa,  s016 to the asylum, an orderly will be around, with your medication, shortly!

the swelling does go down after releasing a foam ball but the vent usually remains larger/puffier than the females.  Mature  males & female will come back into condition within 10 days of being given access to 16 hour of daily light.

For the most part all coturnix can be sexed at 15 days old, by chest markings -  obviously white or Range (Tibetan US?) can't so need to be vent sexed at 6 - 8 weeks. On the rare occasion wimpy males can be suppressed into not foaming by the more dominant males but on the whole vent sexing is the most reliable way to go.
