Im New to quail. I keep chickens and pigeons. I love boiled quail eggs and I like the looks of those roll out cages for laying hens. So I might need to get some quail for my own eggs.

So, What is the best quail for egg production? How much will a good hen lay? Do they lay year round? Ect. ect.

Coturnix are great for eggs and meat. My hens will lay just about all year. I have read up to 300 eggs per year.
They are very easy to take care of. I use the stacked cages. The eggs roll out and they are easy to keep clear.

Pete is right and do not worry about the fancy colors just stick with the brown and it you want a little larger egg then get the jumbo browns. You have to pretty much keep them inside an enclosure that you can control the temp and light because they need 14 to 16 hours of light per day for them to keep laying year round. Just feed them a good quality gamebird starter or turkey starter. You do not have to get real complicated with them just keep things simple.

Sounds good. What could I expect to pay per bird for Coturnix. I guess ill also price wire to build the roll out cages.

Adult Jumbo Browns no more than 3$ per bird and the regular size 2$ ea. Breeding ratio is 1 male to 3 to 4 females. Do some research on how to reconize male and females so you do not get ripped off when buying them. They start laying at 6 to 8 weeks old.

Not sure on the book but a google search will give you lots of reading.
This site has lots of info too. Just spend some time with it.

There used to be a real good one put out by Marsh Farms. If I can find my copy I will let you borrow it I do not think that it is available anymore but could be wrong.

Larry doesn't have it listed, but if you go to the home page, then click on the Amazon link at the bottom, they have it.  If you buy a copy from Amazon, rather than one of their independent dealers, I think Larry will get a few cents for you purchase.
