birdlover,
How big is your parents property?
Steve
Pheasant Hollow Farm
Its pretty big, about an acre. I'll show you what it looks like.
Wow, that big!
Yep, it could be a little bigger maybe an acre and 1/2, thats why I'm thinking about raising birds there since I'll have plenty of room, but i wont be there all the time, its really more of a summer house for now (not completely done yet). But i do have cousins who live across the house, maybe they wouldn't mind to feed the birds. I'm definitely going to plant crazy there, raising birds need more attendion than gardening does so.
Alright guys, got to go to bed early tonight, wake up early to go to North Carolina tomorrow. Going to JFK airport here in NY to Raleigh-Durham International Airport in NC. p42 p42 :?: :?: Hope the flight is good. Can't wait till tomorrow, words can't express how much i like and enjoy being in NC, it's my kinda world.
I'll be back Tuesday!!
birdlover17
Hey Guys!!

Hi Steve,
Yes i took pictures but when i got home that day for some reason the pictures didnt come up, but i have pictures of the place that i took last fall.
I might have to get another camera in the meantime.
The temps down there were pretty good in the mids 80s to 90s, was dry there also.
Enjoy the pics!
Do you like the House?, i picked the brick myself.

Thanks Steve, to be honest i have no idea what a homeowners association is.
Yes this house will be my parents retirement home, but for now a summer house. I like it a lot, my room is nice and big.

Won't be your room by the time they retire i9
In fact, it's way past time for you to be out on your own now !

birdlover,
From the way the property looks, to many trees and to much shade. You will have to do some more clearing for fields and flight pens, unless your parents have a deck of the back.

Looks like the type of place that will welcome many many gamebird pens around the place....tell your parents congrats on a nice retirement home...and it is time for you to be out on your own...you cant keep taging along forever let them retire in peace...

Yes there is a nice deck to the side of the house, and these are pictures of the house almost a year ago so now it looks a little different, the next time i go i'll be sure to take along a better camera, can't stand it when i shot some nice pictures only to come home with nothing. This area in NC doesn't allow chickens or pigs, which are the only livestock not allowed. So i'm sure a couple licences or permits would be all that i need if any.
Reeves,
this house isn't just for my parents its for my family too, so there are plenty of rooms for everyone, later on down the road yes it will be their retirement home. But i got to say i love the quiet natural wild setting here, i never want to leave this place.
slider,
yes hopefully plenty of birds, plenty of room so we'll see. Yes they deserve a nice place, this house was built a little on the slow side but thats ok, i would rather have a house thats been built right taking their time, then to build it in a rush. Even if i wont be in the same area, i wouldn't want to leave the South or NC.
Thanks guys!!

Well across from the house, as you can see in a couple of the pictures is my cousin's house. So they make sure everything is ok, my cousin's husband is a contrator so he deals with this area. He does an excellent job at what he does.

the area does not allow CHICKENS or pigs what makes you think they will allow pheasant and quail etc. etc.
this should answer the gated community question !
you will need a better hiding place than under the deck. or else.... bummer I cant find the community association gathering to tar and feather birdlover icon s020

You forgot to tell us that. That changes everything. We need details so we don't have to read between the lines. That sounds good for you, how long do you figure you'll live there? Nice place.

hey charlie,
Sorry about that guys i thought you knew my cousins had pheasants in NC i beleive i told you guys one time, but its ok. He has pheasants, partridges, over 45 doves, over 58 rabbits. He's had them for awhile, i actually helped him get his birds. To be honest with you, i wish i lived their now, i can't wait. As long as the birds will be taken care of, i'll probably ask my cousin to feed them when i'm not there, but dont know yet. How can i have birds there if i'll be here sometimes. I just need time to think it through.
Thanks!!!

[/quote] thats good that you can keep birds there birdlover. now that you are out of school and thinking of collage maybe your cousin could use some help down there you could be the official chef and bird caretaker
-
you could be the official chef and bird caretaker
Genius of an idea! You could get yourself one of those 3-wheeled bicycles that has a big box on the back, pop-out grille, and deep fryer on the side with a giant umbrella.....and of course horn and bell for safety purposes, and maybe some fringe on the handlebars? Put some quail in it, run around the countryside selling fresh killed/cooked poultry? Reach in the box (feathers flying everywhere), grap a bird, slap it down on the decking board, chop its head off and toss it in the deep fryer. It'd be just like one of those japanese restuarants. You'll have to think of a snazzy name for it.
Yep, you could be where you want to be down south, cookin', raisin' gamebirds, and own your own business. You're set!

Maybe wrap a quail breast in a flaky pastry, like a fancy "pig in a blanket".

ohh i have pics of my cousins setup, if you would like to see them i'll show you.
Wow combine the two talents, i dont see why pheasant egg or quail eggs wouldn't work in a croissants, would add a nice gamey or wild flavor. Yeah wildergamebirds you know i cant have pigs in a blanket, i'll get in biggg trouble.

You know, even modern parents would have to walk in to see what all the squealing was about. I don't Know about N.C. law, but I think it's OK in W.V. Steve??
p.s. The Appalachian, and Smoky mountains are pretty much exempt to most state laws.

birdlover,
Using either pheasant egg or quail egg will not give the croissant a gamey or wild flavor. Then again, if the egg is well over due, it may give the croissant a rotten tast s020

Here's a question for you birdlover, How does your cousin get away with having pheasant and quail in their community, when North Carolina classifies game birds under poultry with the NC Dept of Agriculture?
Or does your cousin have one or both of these?

Well as i've said before only chickens and pigs are not allowed, the county didnt say poultry are not allowed just chickens. It kinda doesnt make sense how chickens are not allowed but all other poultry are, but those are the regulations in the county i'm just telling you. He does has a license of some sort. And he doesnt have quail just pheasant and partridge being the only game birds. I'll post some picture of his set- up later.

birdlover,
This has got to be a set up of some sort, right??? Otherwise. You have got to be kidding me.
The way you boasted about your cousin set up I expect more. I have seen better living arrangements for chickens in 3rd world countries. Did your cousin get the advice on cage requirements from you, or was it the other way around.
NC DNR approved his license application after inspecting the living arrangements for the birds?
I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree...... so sad.. It's a good thing he isn't a member of this forum, you think you get your a$$ reamed out on your set up, we would have a field day with him...
I hope there aren't any P.E.T.A. scouts lurking around this forum. They would just love to make a visit down there.

Hey,
the pen is larger than this, you guys do know that these pictures were taken over a year ago, so his pen is a little different now. I've seen his pens their larger than it seems. He's going to arrange eveything next year a little differently. He does have electric fence around his property to keep the predators away, but he hasn't had any problems with his birds. The last time i saw his birds they were all doing great, i don't find anything wrong with his pens, they have plenty of room.
-
They can't fly!!! They are not chickens. You are kidding me, you don't see anything wrong with those "cages"? How many chukar are in there anyway?
-
:-o
I'd have never posted them pictures. Are those before or after a hurricane hit? I see some good ideas though for those who may come across some debri after these hurricanes hit.
The apple doesn't fall far from the tree WOW
WOW!! is right. Makes me feel as if my pens are sterile.

I'd have never posted them pictures.
You must be related to Charlie Albert "Einstein" Horse, the Apache philosopher.
I think it's just a matter of not being aware or having experienced a proper environment. Good case to be made for the return of 2X4 education.
-
How many chukar are in there anyway?
2 Chukars, he had 3 but one was very aggressive so he released it. It looks small because i didn't get a full shot of the cage/pen, when i go back i'll try again, it really isnt as small as you guys are saying, i know i seen it. I don't want you guys to get the wrong intention of his pens simply because i didnt get a good full view of his pens, if anything its me to blame and the s53 camera that only works half the time..... s176

Sanitation is what concerned me the most, the birds don't care what it looks like. Although the neighbors might.

Well his pheasants are on ground, and it looks like a lot of leaves but at the time i took the pictures it was autumn there. And i highly doubt neighbors becoming a problem they are over several hundred feet away, if not more.

That's like being in an apartment complex around here. It's just not something I would expect to see in a subdivision such as that, I would think it would attract unwanted attention if nothing else. Have you been shopping for a 3-wheeled bicycle?

nope haven't been shopping for a 3-wheeled bicycle, i'm thinking of a dirt bike their pretty cool and they also come with 3 wheels.

birdlover,
Those are cages not pens and they look to be about the size of a large dog crate, either 3 x 5 or 4 x 6. In any case I didn't notice a flight pen for the pheasants.
Does your cousin know that you posted the pictures of his bird cages? If so, and his set up has change over last year, I thinks you should get your cousin to email you some updated pictures of his improved set up in his defence.
Well his pheasants are on ground, and it looks like a lot of leaves but at the time i took the pictures it was autumn there. And i highly doubt neighbors becoming a problem they are over several hundred feet away, if not more.
We kind of got the jest of that, being on the ground and in a cage not able to move around and in a damp enviroment, with no place to deficated does make for an aroma problem even if it is one bird.
