I bought a new HovaBator last summer and hatched out one batch of Bobs.  Do I need to replace the wafer before using it this year?  I didn't know if these wear out from age or only from usage.

Thanks,
JC

I still have wafers on some of my incubators thats been on there for the past 10-12 years and they still work fine.  And I have one incubator that I had to replace already and its less than 2 years old.  Like everyone else said, keep a couple on hand just in case.  When your thermostat goes out you'll know it.

So far I have had the same wafer in 3 different incubators over the past 23 years and is still working fine.  Just in case I would either keep one on hand or ensure that a local feedstore/poultry supply store has some they keep in stock.  You can pick one up for 5 to 10 bucks.

I have had the same wafer in an old incubator for almost 30 years. It still maintains a better temp than all my electronic incubators. As long as the wafer doesn't leak out it's Ether, it is fine. If an of the Ether escapes, the wafer won't expand and contract as much, so it will really screw up your temps.
