Title: Introducing myself
Post by: cherndon712 on April 28, 2008, 01:20:33 AM
Hi all! My name is Crystal. I've just started raising quail. I've had chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese for a few years now. I started hatching eggs this year, and was interested in button quail. Those haven't worked well for me, but I do have 5! I also have about 30 texas a&m quail, 10 pharoah, and 2 manchurians. I'd still like more manchurians and some tuxedos! I'm also interested in partridge chukars, as well as hungarians and snow partridges. Having trouble finding them though!
I hope to learn a lot on this board! I'm so glad I found it!
Crystal

Some friend you are!  Kind of like a Cheetah warning the Gazelle to watch out for the Lion.

Chukars, Red Legs, and crosses, are everywhere, not too hard to raise.  The other Partridges are more rare, and some pretty fragile, from what I've heard.

You do need to be aware of the fact that chicken, turkey, and waterfowl poop carry stuff that will wipe out game birds.  Never walk from other pens to game bird pens.  Rubber boots, overshoes kept in the brooder house, or pen, and never worn outside that enclosure will cut problems a lot.

Thanks for all the welcomes! I'm from WY, so I keep my quail inside my barn. I plan to do the same with the chukars. I feed and water them at different times from my poultry, so I don't kill them! I've read a LOT (maybe too much, conflicting opinions, etc) before I started any animal related venture! I also own over 30 rabbits, which my son shows. And dogs, and a steer.  Neighbors think I'm NUTS! At least I haven't gotten guineas and peafowl, which I'm tempted to do!!

LOL  You are all great! And since I originally posted, I lost all of my animals. My "friend" was supposed to care for them in exchange for $1200/mo rent. She had been a friend for years, so I felt comfortable leaving them in her care while I moved from WY to CO and could find a place there. But, apparently, she didn't feel like caring for them as she starved/dehydrated ALL of them. I had over 80 chickens, 20 chukars, 40 quail, 30 button quail, and various turkeys, ducks, and geese. I didn't find out about it until she tried to sell my steer, and by then they were all gone.
I've since moved back to WY, into my old house. Starting from scratch. Which is bad, since I spent a lot of money on some quality stock for my son to show last year. All in, I'm out over $900  s80 So now I get to buy all those eggs again and spend another 6 months hatching them. Which is fine, as I love doing it. I'm just perturbed as I was supposed to be hatching from my OWN stock this year instead of shipping eggs in again!
So, for all those with eggs, I'm looking again! I'll post in the wanted section!

I've started a suit against her, finally! Not sure how it will pan out, but I hope to at least get some justice for my animals. I still can't believe she could be so cruel, and not even think about it!
I'm getting a good start on building up my bird population again. A local lady had a trio of SQ Mille Fleur d'uccles for my son to show, and we got a quad of SQ Silkies from CO. I've also gotten eggs for some laying breeds, as well as button quail (although I got a bad hatch on those)
We're getting rebuilt, slowly but surely! Takes time, but it's worth it!

Hey Crystal that really sucks, if nothing else get her on attempted rustling. Its hard to believe anyone could pull a stunt like that. What ever you do you are too kind.   s80

Ref replacing the chickens, check out Ideal Poultry in Texas, I got my Buckeye Chickens from them, and they have a number of heritage chickens, turkeys , ducks and geese. Probably more Bantam breeds of chickens then any place I know of, they sell eggs as well as chicks.

It took 2 days for my order to get here but didnt lose any and I got 105% on the order. They have a special sale going on right now on Bantams and Ducklings. All in all I have had  better luck with them then any other poultry shipped. You can google them online, very interesting website.

I got my new American Game Bird Gazette yesterday and its chock full of ads on game birds , if you dont get it check it out, its well worth getting just for the ads but the articles are good too.

Just a last 2 cents, theres no places in CO I would prefer over most places in WY. Its one of my favorite places. You are blessed right where you are. Lousy exfriend and all. Every place has someone like that.

maybe you can pick some up at a stock auction? we have really good ones here . i actually get my bunny stock from our state fair here.its almost like walmart for stock ,because alot of breeders show up there and if you like what they show ,sometimes you can go to theyre farms and find good stock

I don't order from hatcheries, as my son shows the birds. We buy hatching eggs, and hatch them. The kids love this! I have heard good things about Ideal, though. I belong to a great chicken forum, which is where I get most of my stock (and alot of great info!)

We don't have any local stock shows. I just went to the Western Stock Show in Denver, and picked up some birds while I was there! But, for most of the breeds I want, I have to order eggs. I might put in an order for ducklings, because I can't wanna try hatching them!

I do get the gamebird gazette, and LOVE it! I like the articles, and you're right, there is no lack of classifieds in it! I just rarely have the time to make phone calls!

I absolutely LOVE WY, I do. I'm so glad to be back here, in the real world! Or should I say, civilization?!
