Title: Massey Ferguson Planter
Post by: CharlieHorse on January 09, 2008, 08:40:43 AM
The birds are going to like this baby if I ever get it back in operation. I drug it out of the brush at a friends place after about 20 plus years and got everything to turning/working. Parts are practically non-existent for this late 50's, early 60's Massey Harris Ferguson model 39/78 corn planter. Most if not all of this unit was made in Canada.  Got any parts layin' around Reeves?  ^-^  It actually doesn't need anything........yet!

Great find! I love old iron. Things used to be built to last, not like our Bic use it and throw it away attitude now.

WOW ! Very cool there Chuck !

But, as with all free things, you'll now have to buy a couple draft type horses, all the tack, feed for the hay burners, barn and corral for them....that free corn planter shouldn't cost you any more than about 20k to use  s020

If you do end up needing parts.....remember those pics I posted with a huge yard/field full of old equipment ? I can try to get his number....or if he has a computer , put you in touch with him.

We had one of those in our woods! And i was going to drag it out and fix-it up and use it, but then my dad gave it to one of our neighbors and now he is using it as a lawn ornament s020 s176

That's too bad..... s47

I'll post some more pics as it goes, I've had to do some manufacturing of my own to get this thing into working order. Machined a few pieces here and there. It's been quite a bit of work and about $200 so far. I'm not trying to make a show piece out of it, I'm wanting a reliable piece of usable equipment when finished.

Could have bought a 5 dollar hoe and put the kid(s) to work planting the corn

Of  course, you would then have idle hands, and you know what they say about that....

I'm not so sure about that..........the mental anquish may be too great.  It's probably better to spend my time and money on the planter instead of a phsyciatrist.

Hey Charlie

last week in July, bring it up to the Oscoda Cnty Fair at Mio/Fairview Mi. a nice vacation drive for you.

We have LOTs of restored and working equipment, one thing that helps is a sizeable Amish and Mennonite population, they dont exhibit but are a good source for the rest of us for equipment.

Haven't been there. However, I did hear/read about the bear. World record, if I remember right. She shot it because it was robbing her trap line. Nuts ! (re: .22)

It's coming.  One piece at a time......one day at a time.

Yes,  actually I cut the center out of fertilizer cross shaft and replaced just that piece. The bearing is of my doings (still on the drawing board), in order to take pressure off of the crossshaft near the gear where it had broken in the past.

Those are the original colors, except for the fertilizer tube, although I could paint it black with vinyl paint, but I kinda like the blue/black striped.  I made it out of swimming pool hose and sump pump discharge hose. One inside of the other to get it to fit on both ends, it worked out better than the original black rubber hoses which are impossible to find.  It's amazing how much plumbing stuff that I've been able to use on this planter.  Bad thing is that I'll end up having to wait in order to try it out when and if I get it finished........that'll drive me bananas!

I would have finished it earlier, but I've been dragging my feet.....  a70  It was quite a bit of work, but it seems to run great in every aspect.  Now I'll have to wait until planting season to give it a real test run.

I think that is so he can hide it from all of those people looking for scrap

There's alot of truth to that.  I just dug a set of plows, a David Bradley sickle bar mower, and a set of cultivators out of the brush on the other side of that tractor. I haven't got them hauled out of there yet, but will be soon for that very reason.

When you see the same people show up day after day with steel in their trunk at the scrap yard and they live in an apartment............. s53.......theives!!!!  We just keep shippin' it overseas to the steel mills that we disassembled and shipped over there too, so we can get some good high quality China products for "chicken feed"........sorry, that don't work anymore, how 'bout worm food?   And they can build tanks and guns and such for themselves.    We sure are a swell bunch of American people.....and really smart too.

Charlie,  I haven't seen one of those single row corn pickers for about 40 years.  I grew up on a small farm in north central Iowa were my father would pick out about 50 acres of corn with one of those every year.  He never had much trouble with it,  good maintenance is the answer.  Good Luck,   Charlie

Well, got to try it out..........some.  Picked corn by hand since the wildlife and excessive rain destroyed a good portion of it.  I ended up using the picker to husk the corn, it worked surprisingly well.

I couldn't even guess on that yet.  I haven't shelled it yet and will be storing it in a crib to dry further before shelling. I'd be surprised if I even have one, when I should have got an estimated 180 off that size feild.  Needless to say, I'm very disappointed in the yeild. Actually, what corn come up, produced well, then came the deer......... :x .   I'm still shocked as to how much they destroyed.  Here's a picture of ALL of it after coming off of the husking bed:

At least it wasn't a shock to me.  After watching it deteriorate from opposing forces for the past few months, I'm actually surprised there is that much.  They seem to have let up for a spell and I noticed they (deer/coon) were now starting to hit very hard again. So I figured I better get what I could, while I could, before the rain hit and got it wet again. Another week or so at the rate they were cleaning me out, I doubt there would have been anything at all.

Several hundred dollars spent getting $15 worth of corn!!  Maybe I can sell my equipment to birdlover17?

Picking it by hand left the stalks standing of course (what's still standing), so the gamebirds and critters will have a place to run and root around in all winter with some cover. I had some millo and millet amongst some of the corn in the field, a little has survived thus far. Deer ate practically all of it too.

                                                                                                          s47

Lesson of the day:   Don't pick field corn with bare hands, unless you like your corn covered with blood.   :-o

Join the club Charlie, I had worse results once from a 4 acre patch, same predators. Only good I got out of it was turning the family cow into it. She cleaned up the stalks.

Would like to see that one row picker, we had one pulled by four horses behind a jig cart, the whole clan thought it was quite a thing.  I forget the make, it was red.  I was miffed because my grandfather wouldnt let me drive the team, I was all of eight and drove the team pulling the little newer spreader.

At that time in NY if you started getting that kind of crop loss the DNR would give you a permit to take some of the pressure off. It didnt really help a lot.

Steve , I also have noticed the poetic side of Reeves, he has such a way with verse.

try planting pumpkins or squash near the corn patch, the tiny needle like structures on the squash/pumpkin plants keep coons at bay.  They dont seem to like the feeling of something poking them. You can probably  use just about any plant that has thorns or needlelike structures on them, raspberries are another one.
