RATS UNDER AVIARY

I have kept birds in the outdoor aviary for 8 years now. This is the first time I have had trouble with rats. I noticed a couple of holes in the base but thought it may be mice. Unfortunately and very sadly I have now realised that 12 of my CPQ have gone. It has completely depressed me!!
I was supposed to be looking after these birds and I let them down.

I even sealed up the holes with more cement and the b'stards ate through that!!

Ive placed poison and a rat trap down now. Hopefully, they are finished!

Well don`t feel to bad I have let some of mine down also especially when I pull their heads off and eat them with the rest of them looking on....

I've tried many ways to kill them off, and the best one so far is to dig the opening(s) up (with care) and put the end of a hose down hole, for a 20lb propane tank. I then place dirt over the hose at surface level and turn the propane on. Let run for about 3-4 minutes.
Repeat at other mounds/holes.
So far, it has worked every time.

Propane, being heavier than air, will settle to the bottom of their tunnels.
When the rodent passes through this gas cloud, there is no air to breath, so it kills it.

Should work well on Rats as well.

Beware of any open flame or other ignition source. Propane as a gas will settle to the lowest point, even above ground.

I have gophers really bad, some rats, moles etc.  Country living has its fun you know.  I have a nice length of hose that fits really nice on my trucks exhaust pipe, a little reducer and whala.  Stuff the small end in the little rodents hole and let the vehicle run for a while.  Sorry Reeves, this is cheaper than pumping propane in the hole.  I have been told there is even kits for sale that do the same thing.  I just went to Lowes and picked up the hose and reducers.  Besides, I turn on the radio and it's not a total loss of gas.

This does not work very well in the sandy parts of my yard and the turds are starting to figure it out.

Jeff - you can buy Alberta gas cheaper than I can here !

For my needs, the propane  works best. I can carry it around the yard etc.

Your way, I'd need 300' of hose !
