Hint: I could only roll it, had to load with an excavator into the truck, so must be well over 200 lbs.

Reeves,
I have found specimens of petrified or fossilized wood in strip mines in Alabama up to the size of a large coffee can but never one this big. It should make a great door stop for a really large door.

Now that is cool. I had a piece about the same size, but half as long as that one, my sister has it now.......I think?  It's practically all light grey in color. Don't know where it came from, it's been in the family since I was a kid.

Now I am feeling inadequate, your piece of petrified wood is bigger than mine :(. Where on earth did you scrounge that thing up...? You visit the petrified forest lately? You know they arrest people for steeling chunks of the park... :police:....

No park. Was doing a lease clean up (gas) and had to dig a deep hole for the mixed tailings (from drilling) & there it was !

Note: it had to have been at least 25' deep where I dug it up.

Reason for bumping this up, I sent a sliver of it to the States.
May as well junk up a friends house as well  s020

i did a little reading on petrified wood and the value all depends how large it is, if theres any bark left, and how many colors are in it... if you've got any combination of the tree then it could be worth thousands

heres a link to what the colors mean and all the locations you can find it but it doesnt say much of anything on how much it can be worth

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petrified_wood

it seems that the smaller locations(of course) and over seas wood is worth the most

Thanks for the link !

I didn't know it is Alberta's "rock" !

No bark on mine. It was, however, in a forest fire. Carbon is still on it.

I've been meaning to get a rock saw for many years. Just not high on my list, I guess.
I have many other roacks that are rare.
I've seen samples in rock stores (like mine), that were cut and polished & they look great.

Speaking of precious rocks. I was walking on a beach that gets no trafic and my kid found what looked like an Iron laddel scoop. I was at a show and a guy had similar things on his table. turns out it is something that scales off metiorites when the enter the atmospheore. Worth some decent bucks. Turns out my wife chucked it in the garbage. Easy come.. easy go.
