When hatching pheasant and quail eggs when its time to stop turning the eggs do you lay them
on there side or keep them with the small end down? I have always laid them on there side but have read were the chick can drown when the egg is on its side.

During the last three days a chick will position it's self for proper hatching, with the egg on it's side.
Just like in a natural setting.

quail,
I have improved my hatch rate greatly by - I use a paper egg carton & put the pointy end down in the carton durng the lock down stage. the air pocket is at the top & I get way way more to un zip. & I also raise the humidity the last couple days.Raise it  To early & the big chicks will drown in there own juices.

Thanks for the input but I have heard two different methods.I have about 50 ring neck eggs I will lay on there side and see what happens. In about a week I have another 50 ready to hatch.I might try what Dan has tried if I don't have a good hatch.I will let you know how it turns out thanks for the info. ty2

What Dan has posted is true. If the eggs are held standing, or in a way so they do not roll around, you'll get better hatches.
When a chick pips, it will "rest" for a while. If another that has already hatched rolls the piped egg too far, it can drown.
