Title: went to farm......
Post by: birdlover17 on October 14, 2008, 02:23:58 PM
Hey,
today i went to a local farm by me, Steve (pheasant hollow farm) might of heard of it The Queens County Farm Museum.  Does that ring a bell, steve?

Anyways i had a good time seeing all the animals, then i was looking at the goats, the next thing i was just standing there and thought how much fun it would be to raise some livestock, a change from the bird/poultry raising.  I believe i do have at least an acre or so in my property in NC, just have to check to make sure i can raise some in the future.  I know that chickens and pigs are not permitted, have to check with sheeps and goats. I would have to get a pasture of course.  But i'll have to see once i'm done with pastry school i might just move down there, when the house will be finished of course, and start living my dream once and for all.

Good Luck. Those farming dreams can be real nightmares, and you better have a big pile of this:  $$$$$$$$    ^-^

I'm surprised they didn't try to coral you in with the other animals, thinkin' you was some kind of endangered or newly discovered species.

Good Luck to you   You can always tell the people who grew up a little more city than country.  My wife (Vegas girl) thought it would be fun to take over my parents dairy farm too, until I told her what my mom's day entailed.  She decided it wasn't such a good idea anymore.  My great grandparents built it though, so I'm still dumb enough to entertain the thought...

   Yeah, just try to go on vacation for a week or even a weekend with just 2 dogs, a cat, 6 chickens, 2 goats, and quail. s16  The dairy farm (grew up working on one) is a whole 'nother ball game.........milking cows is twice a day, every day, no matter what.  Most neighbors, friends, and even family aren't up for that.  Meanwhile, the barns are falling down, fence needs built/repaired, etc., etc., etc., etc., etc., etc.   :-o

I can totally agree with the dairy farm running your life thing... Mom and dad didn't stay married due to it. Mom likes to go, go, go, and Dad can never leave... But a few goats can be manageable. Maybe... Good luck! I wouldn't mind gathering a few myself sometime in the near future. Gotta talk the hubby into it....

Charlie, vacation?? ..   Why go on vacation when you have a farm, if its something you've always wanted then it has to be something you'll enjoy every day, if not then farming isnt for you.  People put themselves in dreams and make them true, if your wanting to go on vacation all the time what was the point of the farm.  The farm should be a place when you enjoy yourself, i know i would.

Yeah, i mean animals especially farm animals bring so much joy in your life, some people can't see that, its all about money.  If i didnt care about one day getting a small farm, i wouldnt do it, but i'm thinking about it.  Especially if you live your life in the city, and you know in your heart that you should be in the country living your dreams, thats the place you should be.  I personally can't stand the city and see myself living a better life soon in the future.  Thanks jaime!!, Good Luck to you too.

more power to you birdlover. check back in 3 or 4 years on the vacation bit. I took a week about 5 years ago, had a great time. came back to a nightmare, caretaker did not take care !  I have a hard time finding time to go hunting or fishing never mind vacation. even so when a local dairy farm went up for sale I found myself wishing I had the money to buy it. go figure ! ???

You're all right. Even though it's a heck of a lot of work, I am thankful that I was able to grow up on a farm and still have that to go to. Wouldn't trade it for the world. I love my critters and it's probably a good thing that Robert keeps me limited with them or I'd have quite the zoo...  007 a24 a26 a27 a28 a31 a34 a38 a40 c109 p42

You have to realize birdlover, a vacation, or a weekend get-away is something to break up the monotony. There's an old phase that goes like this: This  c109 (leave out the horse) starts to gets old after a while

Just wait 'till you have been a pastry chef for a while and tell us you don't need a vacation. You will soon see that even your new found joy is going to get old.

I gotta show my dad how to post on this, he might get a little chuckle on this thread.  Farming does has its advantages and plenty of uncontrollable disadvantages such as milk prices being the same in the early 70's as the late 90's and fertilzer going up 150%+ every year now.  It would be a stressful life not knowing year to year what your income or expenses may be and not having any major influence on it.  But you are your own boss so you set the 16hr a day work schedule yourself  ^-^

You can be the best in the business, but if you have no time under your belt, no one will hire you, and most employers won't hire some one with 20 job changes a year. They would consider you as a risk.

thanks Steve, i'll be sure to keep that in mind.

I was just reading up on raising livestock and its seem that only 2 to 3 goats would be enough for an acre of land, i know that i do have at least an acre but not sure how the number would matter if your feeding them pellets.  I understand that a pasture would be neccesary to have no clue, i'm just learning now about it now.

How do you plan on doing all this if you are going to a culinary art school. Do you expect your parents to tend to your animals?

When do you think you would even find the time to take on the task as a farmer, or a goat hearder when you will have to be working to support yourself, pay your parents room and board, or do you expect to mooch off of them.

Culinary school is only 6 months long then for 2 months i have to work at a externship site.  I want to work in NC maybe in a bakery of some sort.  If i want to have a little farm i guess i'll try to work where i'll have enough time to tend the animals.  My cousin in NC works as a Contractor and still finds time to care for his birds and rabbits. Or maybe i'll try to work in a place that offers high pay with low work hours (that would work for me).  To me this is what i've always wanted so if i can just put my mind to it i can accomplish it.  And only when i finally move to NC and work there etc...  i'll start buliding flight pens and all the other things to keep me happy.

I'll just say this last thing birdlover, I  don't want to discourage you from farming, its a tougher life but if you love it you do.  I wish you the best at farming because the family farm is about dead and everything is moving towards the corporate farm, to me, not necessarily a good thing.

And, your parents will have a beautiful place when they're finished.  Do they want goats running around?

You know what about the goats, hey if i'm the one who will care for the goats they shouldn't have a problem with it.  Its like the birds i have in my yard, i'm caring for them and sometimes i do get a few more birds (no complaining).  As long as they have nothing to do with them, i dont see how it would be a problem.  I've waited a long time for this, not going to let anyone get in my way...... s176

Ohhh and Reeves, i definely wont keep pheasants under a deck in NC.  Going to take advantage of the space and build me a nice one (or two...three...etc  s020).

Thanks for keeping me informed of all the wrongs i've done with raising birds, if i do become very successful with the gamebird/bird world one day in NC, i know who to thank.   Ever smell a goat?   Have your parents?  All this with no regard for property rights.  Having a desire to have animals is one thing.  Having a PROPER environment, facilities, permits (which are necessary precisely because of people like you), shelter, food source (ever see plants in a goat pen?), containment system, knowledge (first hand, not on line), ability, and true willingness to care for then every stinking, individual, hot, cold sunny, rainy day BEFORE you eat breakfast, or check your e-mail, is a completely different situation.

Yes i have smelled a goat, i dont know i love the smell of a farm, wish i could bottle it...... j41  Yes i think i will have to get a license or permit for the goats, not a problem with me.  Theirs a nice piece of land at least 50 ft from the house, as long as i keep the animals away from the house everything should be ok.  Yes i've seen plants in a goat pen, but i would think like gamebirds they would clean them out in no time.  The property has at least 6,000 square feet (seems like more than enough room for me) maybe more if more trees are cleared.

Birdlover if you arent willing to live with your goats then they're not for you. To be fair to them its only the Billys that smell really rank, but, they are a part of goat life.

You are way undersized there wherever it is for goats. A few bird pens is about it.

the property might be a little more than that, there's a forest near the property so  maybe if i can clear the trees, there could be more room.  I'm just not sure if where all those trees are if thats where the property line stops (i hope it doesn't).  Yes i'll give you the apple pie.

Jake Levi,
I am going to live with the goats, i wouldnt just say here you go take care of them for me , I might find them simmering in a pot the next day.  I might not have room for a herd, but there are breeds that are smaller than the regular ones.  The goats at the farm only had about 25 by 20 ft pen, and their were probalby 7 in there.

Have you done any research on how much pastry's and Pastry Chefs are in demand around the area in NC in which you expect to retire yourself?   My "uneducated guess" would be that there is a huge difference between NY and where ever it is you'd be in the Carolinas?   I would also guess that a "reknown" Pastry Chef status would take several years to establish? Maybe not.   :-|

Good Luck!!

Hey Charlie,

No i haven't but i'll be sure to look at that.  Yes there is a big difference between ny and nc, but i really would be much happier in carolina than ny. Its not about the fact that i
ll make probably more money in NY, i just want to be happy and NY doesn't fit that bill for me.  To be an excellent pastry chef it does take years to accomplish, but just a regular one doesn't.
Thanks Charlie i appreciate it!!!

Same here.   It's called "McHappys Donuts".  The owner of the place owns his own island and 6000 acre ranch. I heard he was only 23 years old.  Amazing huh?

Then we have "White Castles" , they sell miniature hamburgers, which everyone  calls "sliders".      That's no joke.

That's kind of like certain other things, hard to remember a bad one, as long as it's not burned, half raw, or too tart.

On the other hand, give me a holler when it's ready my waistband isn't cutting me in half, yet.

Those were called Belly Bombers in NY. After you ate a 1/2 dozen, and the after taste of onions, you were on the move with the trotts.  s020

I have to drive 50 miles or so to get them. So I buy the Jalapeno cheeseburgers by the "Crave Case", that's 30 at a time.   :-o   Just having them in the car will leave a stench for about a week. But boy are they good!  Sometimes it's best to eat about 15-20 of them the day before you go to work, but only if you need to get even with any fellow employees..... ...........so they say.

Slider, here ya go:
